It's National Airborne Day!! Greenlight, go! Created in 2001, National Airborne Day is a day designated by Congress to honor the nation’s airborne forces. August 16, 1940, marked the first official Army parachute jump, validating the value of inserting ground troops behind the battle line by parachute. To our nation’s paratroopers: we are grateful for your service! #Airborne #FisherHouse #military 📹 DVIDS

Not only do the extreme cold conditions bring unique requirements to the weapons systems but they also expose the gaps in the military’s ECWCS and CTAPS. While both of these systems are great for certain conditions, there are many improvements that need to be made to enhance the warfighters ability to sustain and survive in future conflicts in alpine and arctic environments.
"It is vital that military equipment work wherever in the world American Soldiers need it, and extreme cold is a weather condition troops have contended with frequently in American history." The equipment can never fail! This is true if it's a simple tool or a complex weapon system.

January 28, 1942 - 8th Air Force Activated The U.S. Army Air Forces activated the Eighth at Savannah, Georgia with three major subordinate units: the VIII Bomber Command (BC), the VIII Fighter Command (FC), and the VIII Ground Air Services Command (GASC). During World War II, under the leadership of such generals as Ira Eaker and Jimmy Doolittle, the VIII BC (then Eighth Air Force) formed the greatest air armada in history. By mid-1944, the unit had a total strength of more than 200,000 people, and it could send more than 2,000 four-engine bombers and 1,000 fighters on a single mission against enemy targets in Europe. For this reason, Eighth Air Force is commonly known as the "Mighty Eighth." From May 1942 to July 1945, the Eighth planned and precisely executed America's daylight strategic bombing campaign against Nazi-occupied Europe, and in doing so the organization compiled an impressive war record. That record, however, carried a high price. For instance, the Eighth suffered about half of the U.S. Army Air Force's casualties (47,483 out of 115,332), including more than 26,000 dead. #ww2 #8thAirForce #aviationhistory #usmilitary #AirWarOverEurope #TheMightyEighth

Chief of Staff of the #USArmy Gen. Randy George recognizes Lt.Col. Jay Ireland for a recent article, co-authored by Maj. Ryan C. Van Wie, on organizing combined arms battalions, while both participated in the Harding Project Workshop at the United States Military Academy at West Point last week. This recognition and the workshop are both parts of Gen. George's initiative to highlight exceptional military professional articles, fostering a culture of intellectual growth and strategic thinking within the Army. 🔗 Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gi5wv9eh 📌 Key Insights: • Navigating armored vehicles in Europe's challenging terrain • Effective strategies for combined arms operations • Valuable lessons and recommendations for the Army's future task organization 🔍 Notable Quote: “The concentrated presence of U.S. and Finnish dismounts, firing ATGMs and supported by accurate and timely indirect fire, created multiple problems for enemy defending from battle positions. As the enemy attempted to reposition, these terrain and enemy-based triggers set conditions for a rapid and powerful armored assault.” - Lt. Col. Jay A. Ireland 👥 Join the Discussion: What are your thoughts on task organization and its impact on military operations in Europe? How can these insights shape our approach to future challenges? #ArmyLeadership #MilitaryOperations #StrategicInsights #ProfessionalDevelopment #CombinedArms

One of the most unusual facts about the U.S. Army is that it has its own navy. The U.S. Army maintains more than 100 ships designed to support tanks, infantry, and other ground forces in and around water, ensuring that lakes, rivers, and even oceans are not significant obstacles. The Army, although composed of largely unarmed, small ships, is actually one of the largest “navies” in NATO. MORE FROM POPULAR MECHANICS ON APPLE NEWS Why China Might Turn Old ‘Grandpa Jets’ Into Combat Drones Expeditionary Warfare The U.S. Army is a planetary army and must be prepared to execute combat operations nearly anywhere on the globe. Wars also tend to take place where people live, and according to the U.N. about forty percent of the world’s population lives within 60 miles of a coastline, whether it be on rivers, lakes, or oceans. All of that makes water a significant reality for the Army. Note: Years ago, when still in uniform, I came across this huge Army maritime force and had to consider it for planning in one of my assignments. It used to be much larger, but is a fascinating Army subculture, among many other things.

Gen. Curtis LeMay famously stated, "We go to war with the army we have." But Col. Purcell's insight, "We go to war twice a year," takes this a step further. It underscores the constant need to evolve our military capabilities. The V-22 Osprey embodies this philosophy. It's not just about replicating existing missions; it's about unlocking entirely new possibilities. The V-22 is a testament to our commitment to staying ahead of the curve. It's not just about winning the fights we have today, but being prepared for the unforeseen challenges of tomorrow. #V22Osprey #MilitaryInnovation #NationalSecurity
