Check out the paper we published today in Pediatrics. Moving Due to Unaffordable Housing and Disrupted Social Safety Net Access Among Children doi: 10.1542/peds.2023-061934. Children whose families moved due to unaffordable rents, evictions, or foreclosures were also more likely to lose access to safety net programs, such as WIC, SNAP, and Medicaid, just when they needed those services the most. Kate Leifheit (kleifheit@mednet.ucla.edu.), an Asst Professor at UCLA, led the study as a graduate student at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health using Children’s HealthWatch (https://lnkd.in/ggGnGPDJ) data on 9,344 children from Baltimore and Philadelphia. These findings merit attention from policymakers, particularly given high levels of financial strain and housing insecurity among low-income families. Blitz Blog – AAP renews its call to end corporal punishment in our public schools Welcome back to the Blitz Blog. Today, I want to highlight some recent articles. As a mother, pediatrician, and human, it hurts my heart that there are still places in this country that legally physically hurt children under the guise of discipline. Corporal punishment is defined by Merriam-Webster (Corporal punishment Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster) as punishment that involves hitting someone or punishment inflicted on a person’s body. Legally, “The prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment in the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution imposes limits on the use of corporal punishment on convicted offenders and prisoners. [But sadly], The U.S. Supreme Court has found the Eighth Amendment to be inapplicable to the use of corporal punishment on schoolchildren.” The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and pediatricians across our county urge parents and caregivers to focus on non-violent methods of parenting of our children. The evidence proves that corporal punishment is ineffective as a disciplinary tool, yet it is still legal in 18 states for schools to use corporal punishment as a means of discipline. In addition, corporal punishment disproportionately impacts Black and male children. Black boys are almost twice as likely to be struck as White boys and Black girls are more than 3 times as likely to be hit as White Girls. And 16.5% of students who received physical punishment were also in special education. Terrific papers on integrated behavioral health and pediatrics, identifying the prevalence of need, the barriers to integration and the problem with parity payment from NH Mental Health Care Access In Pediatrics (MCAP) project. MCAP has released three new reports which seek to define the current state of behavioral health integration for NH children and outline opportunities for future work. A collaboration between Institute for Health Policy and Practice Delivery System and Payment Reform and Health Analytics and Informatics, the reports utilize claims data, interviews with payers and providers, surveys, and a review of the existing literature.
