The U.S. higher #education system hosted more than 1 million #international #students in the 2022-2023 academic year alone. From bustling education hubs to quiet college towns, we ranked the most welcoming places for international students on the lookout for community, affordability and fun. Washington, D.C., Boston and Houston spearheaded the way on the list of large cities acting as hotbeds for students from outside the U.S. Boasting rich histories in innovation — particularly in STEM fields — these locations also offer tons when it comes to history, cultural attractions and more. Meanwhile, for international students looking for more peace and quiet in lower-density locations, the list of best cities under 500,000 residents was led by #college towns in the Midwest and Northeast, foremost of which were Champagne, IL; Durham, NC; and Syracuse, NY. In fact, Champagne's population of 90,000 residents includes roughly 40,000 students, guaranteeing an enriching American college experience and a dynamic #student community. Forbes has designated the The University of Texas at Austin as one of the "New Ivies," emphasizing its capability to attract top-tier students and garner praise from employers. This accolade is based on metrics like standardized test scores, admission rates, and feedback from hiring managers, highlighting UT Austin's academic rigor and selectivity. This recognition will likely have significant economic impacts on #Austin. Increased student enrollment is expected to boost local businesses, creating jobs in retail, hospitality, and services. Higher demand for housing may raise property values and rental rates. Additionally, more businesses, particularly in technology and research, may be drawn to Austin to leverage the talent pool from UT Austin, further diversifying and strengthening the local economy. The designation can also attract more public and private investments and increase tourism, benefiting the city's hospitality and tourism sectors. https://lnkd.in/gqewPUHp

Chief Programme Officer at Form the Future Purpose Driven Business | People centric | Impact focused
Community. It's all there. So good to read this. It is only through building this community across not just the corporate sector but stretching it into young people's lives too. Building the bridge, welcoming in, nurturing into opportunities. I was delighted to facilitate a panel discussion around barriers students face in accessing careers unknown to them, we talked through the challenges businesses face in populating talent pipelines locally. The solution is building the bridge into the business community. The solution is meeting with role models who can act as attainable examples of what is possible. The solution is near peer coaching and mentorship to raise confidence that the place for young people here in Cambridge is there. The solution is providing opportunities with more chances to see behind closed doors, more work experience placements, more internships, more longer term montorship, more degree apprenticeships. I encourage businesses to take a collaborative approach to this outreach. The combined efforts of businesses on sites like Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cambridge Science Park, Granta Park is stronger and more sustainable than individual effort alone. I welcome more conversations that translate into action. I look forward to evolving how we build the bridge and leave the way open for young people. Great to see trailblazer Hollie Church of Illumina speaking about this last night. Highly recommend you listen to her story as someone who had to carve her own route to where she is now despite challenges. An advocate for making the path easier for those battling to find the way now, or worse just giving up. The Form the Future CIC team is ever thankful for the support of our partners who came out in force last night.

Cambridge Community Contrast I think that yesterday was possibly the most ‘Cambridge’ day I’ve had in months Starting with breakfast at the Cambridge Ahead All Members meeting hearing from Dan Thorp Andrew McGowan Andy Williams Harriet Fear MBE about Cambridge’s place in the local, regional and national economy Later an inspiring Cambridge LaunchPad event with Steve Thompson Kath Austin hearing about the importance of linking education to the workplace And then a dash to dinner at the Cambridge Network CFO Dinner where John Gourd and Prashant Shah provoked some fascinating discussions about life sciences and funding Community Something that stood out to me was that at all three events, speakers highlighted the importance of community The need to ensure that the growth of the local economy involves and benefits everyone That quality of life is prioritised as much as economic growth And the critical need to support disadvantaged groups for the good of the whole ecosystem At the Cambridge Ahead meeting Alex Rossiter gave an overview of the ‘hyper-local’ Abbey Parent Power project being driven by Nicky Shepard’s Abbey People This is tackling the educational attainment gap in a neighborhood that is in the bottom 20% most income-deprived in England and is designed to empower parents to understand and engage in education and career pathways to support their children 👏 This theme was picked up in the Cambridge Launchpad panel discussion by Tariq Sadiq of Long Road Sixth Form College who talked about the importance of giving kids from deprived backgrounds access to the global employer brands they often live very close to 🙌 As Hollie Church said “role models in STEM are important. Many young adults don’t know what opportunities there are” Araminta Ledger added “there’s a growing realization amongst the Cambridge cluster that they need to foster a local pipeline and make themselves accessible” And the contrast? 🤔 I was treated to the full range of ‘old and new’ venues that makes Cambridge such a special place to work - From Mills & Reeve’s iconic Botanic House with its amazing views (thanks to Nick Finlayson-Brown for his hospitality) - to abcam’s gleaming 5-year old corporate headquarters at Cambridge Biomedical Campus (thanks to Lisa Bamber for hosting) - and historic spendour at St Catherine’s College which celebrated its 550th anniversary last year And all of them gave some calming green views 🌱 🌳 Another great aspect of spending time in Cambridge #cambridge #CambridgeAhead #CambridgeLaunchpad #CambridgeNetwork #teamfi

I appreciate the sentiment, but the data is clear: Michigan does a great job retaining its college graduates (thanks to Glenn Stevens and Richard Florida for their work debunking this myth). The reason we have a talent gap is because we are not attracting young people from other states. We are 7th in the country on college graduate retention and 49th in population growth. Young people aren't moving to cities like Miami, Denver and Seattle because they are low cost, low amenity communities. Young people are moving to cities that are investing in transit, housing, and placemaking businesses. Michigan needs to make similar investments in growing, vibrant communities if it wants to attract more people. https://lnkd.in/eNDiB4DW

The North Country Chamber of Commerce is supporting plans unveiled this week by SUNY and Clinton Community College (CCC) for the relocation of CCC operations and programs to available facilities and space on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. "The process has officially begun for securing a sustainable future for CCC built in significant part by relocation to available facilities and assets at SUNY Plattsburgh in the next few years. The same demographics which are hitting all schools and employers, exacerbated by the lingering impacts of shutdown during the pandemic as well as the high costs of a campus oversized for current and future operations, brings us to a challenging but necessary move, understanding the college's importance resides with its programs and not with its specific location," says Chamber President Garry Douglas. "With this latter point centrally in mind, we are embracing this move and have offered our support and engagement to SUNY Central, CCC, SUNY Plattsburgh and Clinton County in the multi-faceted process of planning and implementation now underway." In the specific case of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing which cannot relocate, the Chamber reports a pledge from SUNY Central "to lead a robust commitment to fashioning a stronger platform to not only sustain the IAM but to finally meet its potential", indicates Douglas. "We encourage support for this overall transition as many outstanding details are worked through over the coming weeks and months." READ MORE >>>https://bit.ly/3U0pwrL
