As a big track & field (a.k.a. athletics) fan, I often get frustrated when people who don’t understand the sport put their ignornance on display. I saw so many comments on social media about Kishane Thompson getting robbed in the 100. That Noah Lyles did not deserve to win. But track has clear rules. The winner of a race is the one whose torso crosses the line first. Not the foot. Not the hand. Not the head. Only the torso counts. And photo-finish technology makes it impossible to make an error. This technology tells you the place and time of every runner in the race. In this video, Ato Boldon, who I think is the best track & field commentator and analyst, does an excellent job of explaining the race.

The United States often dominates the medal count at the Olympic Games. Will they do so once again in 2024? Team USA is expected to be among the strongest across competitions in Paris. It is armed with 592 athletes across numerous sports, including dominant individual athletes like Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Sydney McLaughlin, Noah Lyles, and Xander Schauffele. All should challenge for medals in their respective events and give the team a high floor. Of course, Team USA will face challenges from other countries. Did you know that tug of war was once an Olympic sport? It featured in the Summer Olympics from 1900 to 1920. Interestingly, countries could enter multiple teams in the competition, allowing them to sweep the podium. In 1904, the United States achieved this feat, winning all three medals, and in 1908, British teams took all the top spots. Curious about other sports no longer included in the Olympic games? For the first time, the International Olympic Committee will pay $50,000 to winning Olympic athletes. This compensates for the gradual decrease in the percentage of gold in the first place medals, which now only contain 6 grams of gold, the rest being pure silver. Until the Stockholm Games in 1912, the gold medals were made almost entirely of gold, but after Antwerp in 1920, the amount of gold in the medals decreased until today. The video shows some of the compensation and benefits that winning athletes from some countries receive to compensate for the decrease in the value of the medals. In some cases, the Olympic athletes come out ahead.
