The cement industry contributes approximately 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a critical sector in the fight against climate change. As one of the hardest industries to decarbonize, the focus must be on innovative strategies to reduce emissions effectively. In India, the private sector dominates the cement market, controlling about 98% of production capacity. Many key players are taking significant initiatives: - Ambuja Cements Limited has joined the Global Alliance for Industrial Decarbonization, with a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The company plans to invest ₹100 billion in renewable energy, with the goal of powering 60% of its operations through green energy by FY2028. - UltraTech Cement has reduced its specific net CO2 emissions by 12% and is now exploring green hydrogen as a transformative energy source. - Dalmia Cements Limited targeting carbon negativity by 2040, with a focus on renewable energy and a 100% Thermal Substitution Rate by 2035. - Shree Cement Ltd. recently signed an MoU with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to support manufacturing startups. The company will provide infrastructure, mentorship, funding access, and market connections, promoting innovation and self-reliance in domestic manufacturing. These initiatives are promising, but the question remains: Are they enough to fully decarbonize the cement industry, or do we need disruptive breakthroughs to fast-track progress? What innovations could transform the cement industry and help us achieve a sustainable future? Let’s discuss how we can collectively drive this change! #CementIndustry #NetZero #Sustainability #Innovation

The cement industry is crucial in building the infrastructure that supports modern life, from homes and schools to roads and bridges. However, the process of producing cement is inherently carbon-intensive, with significant emissions resulting from both the calcination process and the energy required to power cement kilns. This amounts to approximately 7% of global carbon emissions, which simply can’t be ignored. This is why ABB is committed to making Real Progress towards a decarbonized cement industry. Bringing together our extensive experience in electrification, automation, and digital solutions, along with partners such as Captimise Coolbrook and SaltX Technology ABB decarbonizes the entire cement value chain.
