THE TENSION OF GROWTH IN THE WORKPLACE - PART 3 Here is the last installment of my thoughts on this topic. ~ Meaningful connections ~ In the last 5 years, I have been part of three major projects working with prominent asset management companies in South Africa. My involvement in all three projects were as a result of connections I made 16 years ago. Even though years had passed, the meaningful connections stood the test of time. It is easy to make an impression on someone. Question is, what kind of impression are you making? Building meaningful connections takes time. Not for the purposes of being recommended by those colleagues in years to come; but building meaningful connections creates a pleasant work environment. Even when you need to work long hours, or solve tough problems; you do not have to tough it out alone. With the current trend of remote work or hybrid, it can be difficult to connect with people. But not impossible. [Side note for those in the office: working with someone in the same physical location and not knowing their name is just downright shameful. Stop that thing.] Build the skills to create meaningful connections. Don’t force anything and don’t be weird. But make an effort. Islands are great holiday destinations. But make for terrible human beings. Your colleagues need you and you need them. Your career is not like a high-rise being built on a limping budget, low quality materials and a builder taking short cuts. Your career is like a city. Build it methodically, taking the time to gather the right materials. No one builds a city in a hurry, and no one can do it alone. You need people.
