A truly Golden Triangle for Life Sciences: Following the recent BIO International Convention held this year in San Diego, One Nucleus CEO Tony Jones looks at where the East of England region sits in the world of Life Science business and innovation. Whilst much attention is paid to the UK Golden Triangle of London-Cambridge-Oxford and how to connect it better, Tony suggests that perhaps in a global industry such as this then a more suitable triangle to connect would be Cambridge-Boston/Cambridge-San Diego. He says there are certainly lessons to be shared across these three outstanding Life Science hubs. One Nucleus, through its longstanding collaborations with its peers at MassBio and Biocom California, the Bio Brits in US connections and focused activities such as the 2024 Boston Bootcamp and One Nucleus @ BIO 2024 events is playing its role in increasing the connectivity and knowledge-sharing across this triangle of locations. 🍃SAVE THE DATE for the Annual BIOEAST Bioeconomy Conference on 6-7 March 2024 🌱The BIOEAST Initiative was given a new boost for the next three years with a new Horizon Europe project, called BOOST4BIOEAST (follow-up of the BIOEAST & BIOEASTsUP project), launched in January 2024. The project aims to mobilise and connect bioeconomy stakeholders with policymakers through national expert communities (BIOEAST HUBs) to strengthen their engagement in bioeconomy policy, research and innovation environments and to set-up long-lasting structures for cooperation and networking at national and macro-regional levels. 🌿To kick-start the community-building and establishment of the national BIOEAST HUBs, the BOOST4BIOEAST consortium and the BIOEAST Initiative jointly invite you to the Annual BIOEAST Bioeconomy Conference organised on 6-7 March on “The role of national HUBs in national and macro-regional bioeconomy policy and R&I developments in the BIOEAST countries” hosted by the Research Centre for Natural Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. I'm at the National Biofilms Innovation Centre's annual summit, and saw that other researchers are observing "strange" results when staining bacteria with the commonly used SYTO stains. Last year, we discovered that bacterial efflux pumps have affinity for many SYTO stains. When using these stains on live bacteria (e.g. for live/dead staining), you therefore see a dim signal from the "live stain" if efflux pumps are active. It looks like the bacteria are stained on the surface (left image). When we add an efflux pump inhibitor, we get the result in the right image. Support for open science practices are on the rise, but challenges remain for both practical implementation and creating increased culture buy-in, says a recent Nature article on the open science movement. Addgene co-founder and CSO Melina Fan spoke on Addgene's role in this work: “Translating beliefs about open access into behaviours is challenging...Repositories lower the barrier to sharing and provide the infrastructure needed to change research culture.” https://hubs.la/Q02hfdwk0
