In late June crew members at our HRBT Expansion Project in Norfolk, Virginia used nitrogen skates to turn around the 2,500-ton cutter head and shield of Mary the Tunnel Boring Machine. In 2023 engineers in London used the same approach but for a much smaller tunnel borer. This friction-reduction method had never been employed in the United States, making Mary’s impressive pivot to bore a parallel tunnel only the second application of this nitrogen skate technology in the world. It also now holds the world record for size and weight. Be a part of this monumental project.
