SELLAFIELD TO DEMOLISH CALDER HALL BLOWER HOUSES Sellafield has received approval from Cumberland Council to demolish the Calder Hall Blower Houses at its Seascale site. These eight buildings, constructed in the 1950s, were integral to the power generation process at Calder Hall until its closure in 2003. Planning documents highlighted the structures as a financial burden and potential hazard due to redundant equipment used to circulate coolant gas through the reactors. The demolition, expected to take 32 to 40 days, will involve up to six 20-tonne HGVs each day of the demolition to remove material. While most of the asbestos has been removed, an additional 25 tonnes of hazardous material will be cleared during the process, and any loose radiological contamination will be removed before work starts. Sellafield plans to retain the concrete foundations for potential future redevelopment. This project underscores Sellafield's ongoing efforts to optimize site safety and efficiency, aligning with broader decommissioning and environmental clean-up initiatives. #NEI #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #nuclearsafety
