Yesterday was #GreatGrimsbyDay! Here are a few interesting facts about our great town ... 🐟 According to legend, Grimsby was founded by a Danish fisherman called Grim. The story of Grim and Havelok is written about in a poem composed around 1280-1310. 🐟Did you know that thousands of Norse invaders passed through Grimsby on their way to inland cities? 🐟In 1201, King John granted Grimsby a charter, granting townspeople to certain rights. King John reigned between 1199 and 1216 and signed the Magna Carta in 1215. So actually, Grimsby got its Charter before the Magna Carta’s charter of citizen rights came into force! 🐟One million bricks built Grimsby Dock Tower, which was built in 1851 and follows the style of the Palazzo Publico in Siena, Italy. Capable of holding 33,000 gallons of water, it was used to open and close the lock gates. 🐟Grimsby’s Royal Dock was built in 1851 and was described as representing the ‘first truly modern dock in Britain’ by author, Gordon Jackson 🐟The arrival of the railways in 1848 made it easier to transport goods to and from the port, allowing fresh Grimsby fish to quickly arrive at Billingsgate Fish market. The demand for our fish grew to such an extent that at its peak in the 1950s, Grimsby became the largest fishing port in the world. 🐟Our Traditional Grimsby smoked fish has Protected Geographical Indicator status because of the special way cod and haddock is prepared is traditional to Grimsby. Only 40 UK products enjoy this PGI status. 🐟There are four places in the world called Grimsby – our Grimsby (of course!), Grimsby in Norway, Grimsby in Illinois, America and Grimsby in Canada. We hope you had great Great Grimsby Day. @discovernortheastlincolnshire Learn more about Grimsby’s history at https://lnkd.in/e9SDv7yU #grimsby #greatgrimsbyday #lincolnshire #eastcoast #ukcoast #porttown #greatgrimsby #cleethorpes

White oaks are the most abundant tree in eastern forests, and they’re also the most ecologically important. Wildlife from blue jays to black bears feast on their acorns, while their leaves and bark offer food and shelter for hundreds of species of butterfly and moth. White oak is also one of the most valuable woods around, prized for whiskey barrels, furniture and flooring. As essential as white oaks are, their futures are at risk. That’s why we’re helping to restore and plant white oaks across eastern forests. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3ri5LiV 📸 Stacy Smith Evans
