There are so many first-gen students from various marginalized and underserved communities. After interviewing 15 DACA students for my dissertation research, many of the statements below emerged as themes that required a high level of persistence and resilience. We not only need to increase the efficacy and organizational footprint of currently established systems/models of support for first-gen students that are working, but also adapt more culturally robust models of support for first-gen students from diverse communities and and backgrounds. Additionally, it’s critical these models/systems of support include post-secondary educational professionals who are first-gen themselves and/or have expertise, insight, and a fundamental understanding of successful models of support and the structural barriers first-gen students experience when pursuing higher education.

Earlier in the semester, I was selected to be one of 40 undergraduate students to participate in the FYRE research program at UNL! Below is more information including what the work I do is for, an overview of the program, and the FYRE roster.

conomics professor Tyler Cowen on raising the aspirations of others: "Yesterday I had lunch with a former Ph.D student of mine, who is now highly successful and tenured at a very good school. I was reminded that, over twenty years ago, I was Graduate Director of Admissions. One of my favorite strategies was to take strong candidates who applied for Masters and also offer them Ph.D admissions, suggesting they might to do the latter. My lunch partner was a beneficiary of this de facto policy. At least two of our very best students went down this route... neither realized that it was common simply to apply straight to a Ph.D program, skipping over the Masters. I believe this is now better known, but the point is this. At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. PhD introductory event First event that I attended to. Yah, I learn so much in this program. The important thing is PhD will be long journey, you have to work hard but do not forget to rest hard too, and then do not plan too much wkwkwk.

NCKRI is pleased to announce our next call for grants in support of cave and karst research. NCKRI is currently advertising two opportunities: The NCKRI National Seed Grant Program is designed to enable investigators to initiate new cave and karst research, and incentivize new principal investigators to enter the field. Inspired by Dr. Hagerman's significant contributions to Fragile X research and her unwavering commitment to mentorship, this initiative seeks to continue her legacy of fostering collaboration and professional development within the Fragile X community. Each year, the NFXF provides funding for one or more summer research projects for undergraduate or graduate students, with awards of $2,500 each.
