One thing I loved about living in Europe is how easy it is to get around - internationally but also locally, and especially by bike. The cycling infrastructure is next level, and I often think how wonderful it would be if our Australian and New Zealand cities embraced urban cycling to the same extent. This article explores whether it's better to proactively create safe and well-designed cycleways to encourage cycling or monitor existing patterns and build infrastructure to suit the evolving demand. Enjoy!
🚴♂️ Which comes first: the Cyclist or Cycleway? 🚴♀️ 💡 Is the proactive creation of cycleways a catalyst for increased cycling? By providing safe and well-designed pathways, can cities encourage individuals to embrace cycling as a viable mode of transport? ❓ Or, given resources are limited, does building cycleways without a substantial cycling population result in underutilised infrastructure and wasted investments? Is it better to monitor existing cycling patterns and adapt infrastructure to suit the evolving needs of the community? 👉 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eGe7wX9p #urbanplanning #urbancycling #sustainabletransport #cycleinfrastructure #cycling #urbandesign

Cycling in snowy and icy conditions? No problem! In #Finland, people don’t let the winter stop them from cycling. This is thanks to winter maintenance and preparedness of the cyclists. Of course, studded tyres also improve safety in winter. The aim in winter maintenance is that there shouldn’t be more than a few centimetres of snow on pedestrian or cycling routes. Once the snowfall ends, the snow is removed from paths within four hours. Delighted to be participating in The Cycling Industries Europe Summit here in Brussels. We are proud to be a member of this organisation...Why? This body, founded just a few years ago, has successfully mobilized and led the charge to push the EU to recognize cycling through the European Declaration on Cycling, as an *industry* that creates jobs (1 million EU in fact!)... Thanks to the passionate dedication of this small team, the industry will benefit from the funding it deserves to promote cycling, stimulate industry collaboration, competition, economic growth - resulting in more jobs, less cars, better health and that's just a no-brainer. What role do we play in our corner of the cycling industry? According to IPSOS Mori, 6 in 10 europeans do not feel safe cycling in their own area. We want to change this, collaborating with the industry to provide scalable safety which helps reduce rear collisions and close passes, but that also helps cyclists identify safer routes based on the frequency of such events. The future is two-wheeled! 🚲🏍️🛴
CIE President Tony Grimaldi: "Every cyclist is an economic success story. Invest just 10% of transport and industry budgets in cycling, and we will be your very best investment. We hear words about better mobility—now it’s time to see this reflected in budgets." #CIE2024Summit #CyclingIndustriesEurope
