Since Donald Trump was elected President of the United States in 2016, there's been a growing interest in American elections among Indians. While the U.S. election system is somewhat more complex, it can be compared to India’s with a few significant differences. In India, we have 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, each representing a specific area, and these are distributed across states and Union Territories based on population. In the U.S., each state is allocated a certain number of electors, which is the sum of its seats in the House of Representatives and its two Senators. In total, there are 538 electors: 535 from the 50 states and 3 from Washington, D.C. In both countries, the objective is similar: to win a majority—either 272 of the 543 seats in India or 270 of the 538 electoral votes in the U.S.—to form the government or, in the U.S., to become President. However, the key difference lies in how these seats or votes are awarded. In India, voting happens at the constituency level, meaning the candidate with the most votes in each of the 543 constituencies wins a seat in Parliament. This results in 543 individual contests, with each seat awarded separately. In the U.S., the process is more of a winner-takes-all system at the state level (with the exception of two states). In 48 states and Washington, D.C., the candidate who wins the most votes in the state receives all its electoral votes. Only Maine and Nebraska use a proportional approach, where electoral votes can be split based on the distribution of votes within the state. For a more detailed analysis of the process and historical voting patterns, we have written extensively on this topic and compiled datasets. https://lnkd.in/gWVBJuEE https://lnkd.in/gjt8QEf9 https://lnkd.in/gU-gYRyf
