"Waste not, want not" might seem like a tired phrase, but it takes on new meaning when it comes to clean drinking water. You might not realize it, but everyday staples in your home have a surprisingly large water footprint. Take your favorite dish of crispy fries and the juicy tomatoes in your ketchup; 1 kg of potatoes requires 287 liters of ultra-pure water to produce, while 214 liters are needed for 1kg of tomatoes. The global agriculture sector uses 70% of the 3.8 trillion cubic meters of water humans consume annually. Despite this immense water footprint, over 2 billion tons of food are wasted globally every year, translating to 50% of all food produced. The future looks even more concerning, with projections suggesting our ultra-pure water needs for food production could triple to a staggering 10-13.5 trillion cubic meters annually by 2050. Change can begin at home. We can make a big difference by making small adjustments like planning meals and storing food properly to minimize waste. Every bite saved is a win for our planet's water resources. The IDRA recognizes this escalating crisis and the need for swift action. We collaborate with organizations worldwide to innovative solutions like desalination and water reuse technologies. We aim to preserve our vital water resources and secure a sustainable future for all. 🌍 A recent scientific report reveals a 1.2°C rise in global temperature, underscoring the need for immediate action as we edge closer to the 1.5°C tipping point. Alarmingly, food waste is a major driver of climate change, accounting for almost a third of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Once in landfills, this waste produces methane—a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO2. 🚜 Introducing Food to Fertilizer: Our cutting-edge dehydrators expertly convert food waste into dry, sterile, pathogen-free organic fertilizer within 12-24 hours. Unlike other methods that create liquid mixtures needing enzymes or additives, our fertilizer can be directly blended into soil to enrich plant growth. 🌱 By transforming your food waste into fertilizer, you help slash methane emissions from landfills and support a sustainable agricultural supply chain. Imagine the positive environmental impact if everyone adopted this approach, potentially cutting greenhouse gases by the equivalent of taking 32.6 million cars off the road! Thinking about that slice of pizza or bar of chocolate in the fridge? These may seem small eats to satisfy your midday munchies, but did you know that it takes a staggering 42 gallons of purified water to produce a single slice of pizza and another 3170 gallons of purified water to produce a pound of chocolate? These numbers might seem unbelievable, but they highlight the hidden water footprint of our simple daily foods. Every ingredient on your plate has its own water footprint. From the wheat in your pizza crust to the cocoa beans in your chocolate bar; vast amounts of purified water are required from agricultural irrigation to industrial processes used in production. These footprints can vary greatly depending on climate, farming practices, and food type. Therefore, making conscious food choices is the start to which we can advocate for the sustainable use of water through our day-to-day consumption. At IDRA, we aim to address global water scarcity by recognizing a holistic approach to water security. By identifying the limitations of traditional clean water sources, we advocate for inclusion of alternative water sources through desalination and water reuse technologies and promote circular systems and responsible consumption to ensure the world understands that preserving water starts with our own habits.
