Print is back. At least The Onion in print is back. If you haven't heard, The Onion is betting on print to launch/grow a paid subscriber base. For $60/year (launch pricing, RRP to be $99, if you believe them ;)). Besides the obvious environmental concern, will it work for their business? As a marketer with some growth and subscription experience, I think they have a few things going for them: 1)True differentiation. In an era where efforts to grab a "share of wallet" by consumer content companies is a gory death match, adding a print component to your offering is unique (some newspapers are the obvious exceptions. The New York Times, for one, continues to offer print, something I personally appreciate for the Sunday crossword). 2) A consumer insight. They believe that younger consumers are "discovering" that a physical product can be a more immersive experience than a digital one. From the ED Jordan LaFlure: “I think for the same reason that 18-year-old kids are buying Taylor Swift on vinyl,” Mr. LaFlure said, “we can introduce those same kids to the notion that a print publication is a much richer way to consume media.” I am not saying The Onion will succeed--I have no crystal ball--but at least they have some of the basics of marketing behind them. Spotted this ad on the Newcastle Metro yesterday and it made me think. When people use stats in an ads, packaging, or just copy in general, they tend to want the stats to be as precise as possible (e.g. in this case 1017 times bigger than your phone). We intuitively think that the more precise we are, the more credible and persuasive we'll be. But psychological research shows that the opposite is true. It's more memorable and importantly, more believable if we use a round number in a statistic. So in this case, it would be better to say "over 1,000 times bigger than your phone". #ConsumerPsych #ConsumerPsychology #BehaviouralScience

Let's attract and retain digital subscribers...by going back to print. Sounds crazy enough to work, that's according to The Onion. And no, this isn't satire or joke. "Futurist believes envelope stuffing is the top post-AI career for humans." Early in my career before most tech journalists had their own emails, I worked at a PR firm spending parts of my agency existence printing press releases under the growing piles of letterhead for various clients, stuffing them in envelopes and dropping them off at the post office. Since few of my friends actually requested these publications, I suppose I should also give myself some credit for inventing spam. Maybe not. "Print is the shiny object we didn't know we needed." A return to our print roots may sound simultaneously nostalgic and ill-advised, but The Onion is doing it. Why? Because no one else. It's part of a broader growing trend in the media industry to try new ways to attract and retain digital subscribers. "Man rules the world and current generation after finding old box of vinyl, DVDs and cassettes." We've seen with the popularity of vinyl where sales have been on an upward trend for the past three years. DVDs or what remains of them at retailers have more pushing for their return. And, Gen Z is embracing cassette tapes though someone needs to teach them about auto reverse. Cardboard Box Family launch "We Are Homogeny Tour". Regardless of the industry, differention is more important than ever. While the focus is typically on the product or service itself, the messaging and communication play an important, if not the most important role in reaching and engaging customers.
