Obviously, airlines won't be disintermediated by air taxis given that commercial flights cover long range travel. However, there are a lot of the same competencies that will be required when running an airline versus an air taxi operation. Safety and security require a similar discipline for both. Air traffic control will be very different in some regards and similar in others. Managing the process of selling tickets, marketing flight services, running facilities, onboarding passengers are all very similar. You can easily make an argument that airlines are ideally positioned to take on air taxi operations. Plus, they own brand perceptions that encompasses all of these attributes in the public mind. There are several airlines that have made forays into the eVTOL space. Several years ago, United Airlines announced that it had place a $1 billion order for 200 Archer vehicles. And more recently Southwest Airlines announced a collaboration that will give Archer access to 14 airports in California. The company plans to start service by the end of next year and has inked a deal with Stellantis to manufacture its Midnight aircraft. The pitch is mainly that a 1-hour car trip can be reduced to 10 minutes in an air taxi. It is likely that there are enough high net-worth individuals in California who don't use helicopters today but are still willing to pay for an air taxi. Whether that leads to profitability for all players involved is another question. While it isn't sexy to say so, we may effectively see that air cargo as a better play initially. #truckl #innovation
