Skillful pilots gain their reputation from storms and tempests." — Epictetus Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher who lived from approximately 50 to 135 CE. Born a slave in what is now Turkey, he gained his freedom and later taught philosophy in Rome before being exiled to Nicopolis in Greece. Epictetus is best known for his teachings on Stoicism, which emphasize the development of personal virtue and wisdom as the path to a good life. His ideas were primarily recorded by his student Arrian in works such as the "Discourses" and the "Enchiridion" (also known as the "Handbook").
