TSX listed Ivanhoe Mines and Gécamines, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) state-owned mining company has signed a new joint venture agreement to restart the Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine. According to Ivanhoe President Marna Cloete, both surface construction activities and underground development at Kipushi is tracking ahead of schedule for first production, expected in the second quarter of 2024. The signing of the new joint venture agreement heralds the beginning of a new era of production for the Kipushi Mine, which will resume operations one hundred years after first opening in 1924 as the world’s richest copper mine. Gécamines’ Chairman, Guy-Robert Lukama Nkunzi says that the relaunch of the Kipushi mine is a source of pride for all of Gécamines’ employees, the local communities of Kipushi town, the Haut-Katanga Province as well as our country as a whole. Ivanhoe Mines’ Founder and Executive Co-Chairman, Robert Friedland says that Kipushi is an extraordinary mineral endowment, holding not only the world's richest zinc orebody, but also significant quantities of copper, lead, silver, germanium and gallium. "Kipushi is another great example of the unparalleled opportunities in the DRC for mineral development. There is no better place on our planet to build a mine. This makes the Central African Copperbelt and high-grade mines, like Kipushi and Kamoa-Kakula, strategically important worldwide … especially in light of the increasing fragmentation of supply chains and the growing demand for low-carbon-intensive strategic minerals," says Friedland. #whyafrica #whymineafrica #DRC #mining #miningnews #africanmining #africa #naturalresources Image credit: Ivanhoe Mines

The Nigerian mining sector made another giant stride over the weekend as Chart and Capstone Integrated Limited and a Chinese firm, Sinomach-He, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the proposed $1 billion (N1.6 trillion) iron ore-to-steel project planned in Kogi State. The Chinese company is involved in mining, iron production, steel rolling, steel manufacturing, and infrastructure construction, and it supplies 80 percent of the steel required by the Chinese economy. To promote local value addition, the Nigerian government has reversed the pit-to-port policy, where mining companies exported raw minerals, with a focus on local extraction and value addition and introduced a requirement for mining licence applicants to include plans for processing raw minerals as a condition for approval to create jobs for the youths, facilitate skills transfer and improve the trade balance between the country and its trading partners.
