With three political blocs of roughly equal size refusing to cooperate, France appears to be ungovernable. The formation of a government will be challenging, leading to a period of instability in the country. Using #macrobond, we can effectively track France's real yield on its 10-year government bond, providing valuable insights into the country's current credit conditions. Interested in seeing how other countries are doing? With the 'Change Region' feature in Macrobond, you can easily create the same chart for countries like the US, the UK, or Japan—and it only takes about 30 seconds! #FrenchElections #Macroeconomics #GlobalMarkets #EconomicPolicy #DataVisualization #France

In her latest video, Dr. İlke TOYGÜR, Director of the Global Policy Center and a professor of Geopolitics of Europe at IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs, provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges that Europe faces following the 2024 European Parliament elections. She points out the rise of political fragmentation, primarily due to the emergence of Eurosceptic groups, which poses significant challenges for decision-making within the European Union. As the EU navigates crucial transitions, including the green transition, technological shifts and addressing economic inequalities, Dr. Toygür's insights are invaluable for understanding the current landscape. Watch the full video to explore these pressing issues in greater detail.

I am delighted to announce my book 'The Political Economy of Authoritarian Populism: Capitalists without the Right Kind of Capital' will be published in July 2024 wit Routledge: https://lnkd.in/e6TxpaMu Blurb: This book emphasises the importance of state-business relations and external capital for structuring and strengthening authoritarian populism in Hungary. It argues these capitalist relations are crucial to understanding the economic aspects of this ideology, which has developed in the country since 2010. The book investigates both ‘internal’ and ‘external’ legs of the Hungarian political economy. First how a politically loyal national capital owning class has subsumed domestic business. Second the government’s operationalisation of ‘new’ inward transnational capital inflows – especially from China and Russia – to finance large-scale infrastructure projects, which complement extant investment particularly from Germany. Together, these developments have strengthened the hegemonic nature of Hungarian Authoritarian Populism, helping the government to continued electoral success. This model of governance is attractive to similar ideological expressions in the region and beyond who look for an example to emulate. Thanks to Adam Dixon, Péter Mihályi & Andreas Nölke for the kind endorsements. The full list of acknowledgements is too long to insert here but will be available in the book proper. This work was conducted during my time University of Bristol & The Open University Pre-order your copy today and join the conversation on the importance of state-business relations in shaping political ideologies. #HungarianAuthoritarianPopulism #politicalEconomy #RoutledgePublishing #hungary #infrastructure #china #russia

Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Postdoctoral Fellow in Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service
Dear all, please tune in next Tue, Jan 30th 3-4:00PM ET for a discussion of my new book "When Left Moves Right" - on the still relevant topic of right-wing populism spread and resilience in Europe (and the West more broadly). Max Bergmann will moderate our discussion with Georgetown's Daniel Kelemen. The book explores the rise of right-wing populist parties in postcommunist countries over the last two decades, often at the expense of previously successful center-left parties that had rebranded as pro-market following the collapse of communism in the region. Using various levels of analysis, the book argues that scholars must incorporate economic factors when explaining the collapse of support for left-wing parties and the rise of their rivals on the populist right. Additionally, it claims that the supposed uniqueness of this process in Eastern Europe has been overstated, with parallel processes playing out in historically Western countries as well. https://lnkd.in/eRXPErCZ

#Geoeconomics and other aspects of what has been termed ‘#polycrisis’ have been afflicting the #EU. The ‘rise of geoeconomics’ has been changing the demands and the EU has responded by adopting a raft of new #policy tools. The article by Jasa Veselinovicč provides the first comprehensive examination of changes that have been engendered by (and justified with reference to) the perceived requirements of geoeconomic statecraft. With geoeconomics dominating global politics, the EU has adopted new policy tools, marking a paradigm shift "from neoliberal consensus reigning supreme" towards "a convergence around a geoeconomic approach to external action," observes SCRIPTS / BGTS PhD Researcher Jasa Veselinovic in this article recently published in the European Foreign Affairs Review. Our recommendation for today's #PublicationFriday examines the changes in knowledge demands, production, and practices on the working level, highlighting how EU policymaking is blurring the borders between foreign, security, and trade policies through increased in-house think tank activity, foresight investments, and proactive engagement with corporate actors. Wishing you a good read! ogy.de/r85r
