The developing brain of the young adult is highly susceptible; substance use during this stage can disrupt cognitive functions and impair decision-making. A matter of urgency is that young adults may succumb to peer pressure, experimenting with substances to fit in or gain acceptance. This stage is a very crucial one. Young adults that advise drugs can lead to a decline in academic performance, hindering future educational and career opportunities. Young adults that engage in substance abuse are at an increased risk of developing mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Fight your fight differently Dear young one. Your fight is different ICHAD is rooting for you, #ichad #ichadfoundation #youngadults #druguse #brightfuture

Anxiety in children: Is it more than worry? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 8 children in the UK suffer from an anxiety disorder. While some level of worry is a natural part of childhood, parents and guardians need to decide whether a child’s concerns are a typical response to everyday stressors or indicative of developmental anxiety. By understanding the differences, parents and guardians can provide the necessary support and seek appropriate interventions, such as creating a nurturing environment that encourages an open dialogue about worries and anxieties. Validating a child’s feelings can go a long way in making them feel listened to and understood. There are also effective psychological interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based talking therapy recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of anxiety. Mental health struggles are immensely miscommunicated and misunderstood, making them hard to navigate for anyone, let alone youth. Navigating the unknown territories of adolescence is challenging, especially when the stigma surrounding mental health remains so prevalent. As someone who was faced mental health issues throughout my childhood and adolescence yet lacked a diagnosis, I was frustrated and confused due to my abundance of emotions. The “moody” child or teen may be facing internal battles they cannot even begin to understand. They too face irrational, compulsive, and intimidating thoughts and feelings - but in a much smaller body. Be kind and empathetic, and please take the time to research mental health issues faced by children and youth. Labels are damaging, but so are #mentalhealth challenges. Self stigma is REAL and I applaud the youth that came forward with their experience. You are not alone. #may7icare
