Athletic Brewing is America's biggest non-alcoholic beer brand and it just closed a new financing round that gives it an implied valuation of around $800m! It was only founded in 2017 and was called "Athletic" because it wanted to reflect the lifestyle of its customers and because it was an easy name to shout in a noisy bar 🤣! This is notable for the following reasons: 🚫 Younger people are drinking less than previous generations. This is probably because a) they are more health-conscious and b) because there are actually some pretty decent alcohol-alternatives out there. 🍺 Non-alcoholic beer is now the fastest-growing segment of the beer market. Earlier this week we saw Carlsberg buy Britvic as the former wanted to boost its non-alcohol product line-up. 😇 There seems to be a change in the locations and what goes on in social gatherings (particularly in work-related events) so they are more inclusive of non-drinkers. Brewers around the world are re-working their product array to take the above into account. I would have thought that any non-alcoholic beverage specialists will either continue to grow quickly or get bought out by a big player like Diageo, Asahi etc. That would certainly give founders something to toast! However, recent industry data and statements from beverage giants show that the non-alcoholic beer subcategory is gradually becoming a new consumption trend in the beer industry. The market value of alcohol-free and low-alcohol beer has exceeded US$13 billion in 2023, and it is expected that by 2027, the share of alcohol-free beer in the overall alcohol market will grow to nearly 4%. In response to the trend of healthy consumption, many beverage giants have also begun to increase their investment in non-alcoholic beer. The CEO of Asahi Breweries, Japan's largest beer manufacturer, recently made a bold prediction that by 2040, zero-alcohol or low-alcohol beverages will account for half of the company's sales. Earlier, in an interview with CNBC, the CEO of Suntory also said that Suntory has observed new consumption trends and launched more zero-alcohol and low-alcohol beverages for consumers to choose from. AB InBev's efforts to expand its non-alcoholic portfolio include investments in brewing technology, with plans to invest €31 million in non-alcoholic brewing technology at several of its breweries in Belgium. As the brewing industry is still recovering from the aftershock of the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol-free beer has become one of the bright spots in the troubled beer sector. And while buzz-free beer still accounts for just over 5 percent of global beer revenues, it has outgrown the alcoholic beer segment by a wide margin for the better part of the past decade, delivering double-digit growth in four of the past five years, with 2020 the only exception. Having long been neglected by the industry, non-alcoholic beer is now viewed as an opportunity by brewers, which are continuously extending their selection of low and no-alcohol choices in response to growing customer demand. “Consumers are increasingly looking for healthy hydration and a tasty, adult refreshment with lower or no-alcohol content to enjoy on any occasion,” the world’s second-largest brewing group Heineken recently noted in its annual report. “As this global consumer trend for health and wellness continues, we see a great future for low-calorie and non-alcoholic beer,” the report concludes. As the following chart based on data from Statist Market Insights shows, the non-alcoholic beer segment is poised for strong growth in the years ahead. Following a small setback in 2020 due to Covid-related lockdowns and lifestyle changes, which hit the out-of-home segment particularly hard, the industry is back on track and expected to see solid growth this year and in the years ahead.
