Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 storm to ever form in the Atlantic, has devastated several islands in Grenada and knocked out power in 60 percent of Jamaica. Food For The Poor already prepositioned disaster preparedness kits, each with supplies for at least 250 families, in Jamaica, Grenada, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago. Please keep all those recovering from Beryl in your prayers. 💙 To support our response to Hurricane Beryl and our overall disaster response program, go to https://lnkd.in/guVzJiYj

Partnerships are key!
Here's a glimpse at GEM’s first week's work for Hurricane Beryl survivors throughout 5 countries. Global Empowerment Mission and our partners are on the ground distributing supplies for the aftermath of this major hurricane. Hurricane Beryl has affected the Caribbean significantly, with heavy destruction and damage across St. Vincent, Grenada, Jamaica, and other surrounding islands. Additionally, Beryl also caused damage in Mexico and Texas. From our Doral, Florida Headquarters, we are packing and sending large-scale humanitarian aid onto air cargo and trucks, landing in all the affected zones. We have team members deployed to support affected individuals with critical aid on the ground in Grenada, St. Vincent, Tulum, Cozumel, Jamaica, and Houston. We will be conducting these distributions indefinitely. The GEM team is providing food, water, hygiene supplies, tarps, generators, mattresses, and other necessary supplies to those impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Tomorrow we are already stating roof repairs in Treasure Beach, Jamaica with our partners. #Beryl is the strongest and most anticipated hurricane ever recorded in June. At one point, it reached Category 5 as it passed through the Caribbean. Even as a Category 4, it has affected thousands of people in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Media reports indicate seven deaths as of July 4th and several people missing. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has produced three maps showing significant damage to the islands' infrastructure. Power outages and lack of drinking water are also reported. Union Island, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, suffered almost total devastation. Beryl is forecasted to pass south of the Cayman Islands on July 4th as a Category 2 hurricane and make landfall on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico on July 5th. #CADENAInternacional, whose mission is to provide hand in hand aid to those in need, is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to take action. If you, your company, or organization are interested in helping, please contact alianzas@cadena.ngo. Your donation will make a significant difference in our mission to heal the world. Hurricane season begins June Ist and lasts until November 30th. Get prepared by creating a family disaster plan and emergency supply kit. In addition, make an inventory of all the items in your home. Remember to keep your gas tanks halfway full during hurricane season, in case you have to evacuate with little notice. Identify where you could go ahead of time if told to evacuate: a family member's home in another town, a hotel, or a shelter. Keep telephone numbers and maps to each location on hand. If you need help getting out of town before a storm, dial 2-1-1 to register for evacuation assistance.

***CAUTION, EMERGENCY MANAGER DORK MODE*** I reviewed a situation report yesterday by Mercy Chefs for #HurricaneBeryl response. They are serving in multiple islands of the #Caribbean and in the City of Houston and across Harris County, Texas. So far, 65,000 meals + in Texas. A donated value of over $650,000 just in meals alone. (value averaged for federal meal rate) This is on top of countless disasters they have responded to across the country this year and it simply amazes me and reminds me to be thankful to those who support them financially as well as by volunteering. As an emergency manager it is easy to take for granted the work of nonprofits and imagine endless funding supply and everything comes for free. The truth is, for many nonprofits, donor fatigue and overwhelming seasons of disaster response can have a devastating impact on their ability to respond to the next disaster. While they don't charge for their service, there are avenues that #EmergencyManagement can pursue to help sustain their response. Unfortunately, many local emergency managers either aren't aware of the funding through Public Assistance, Cat B or they report to States and regions that discourage it under the guise of "how dare they ask for reimbursement." (this is more often the rule than the exception) International Association of Emergency Managers , National Emergency Management Association To build your local mass care capability, you MUST review the PAPPG guidance (Version 5 coming soon) to help you and your Finance Admin team leverage Cat B to ensure your local response isn't contingent on how a disaster season has impacted your reliable partners. Whether a local expense or a reimbursable one, you will never regret supporting nonprofits that are caring for your residents. Usually people having water and food is the last thing on your radar, but the first thing to get you hear at your after-action. If you need help digesting this, feel free to reach out to Rule One Consulting LLC at support@ruleoneconsulting.com where our consultants can help you navigate it. "Essential lessons remain consistent while new individuals continue to learn them." ~no formal attribution available Mass Care is often wrought with mistakes and "wish I would have known that" but rest assured, in the words of #BareNakedLadies Song, "Its All Been Done" Thanks to ALL the nonprofits AND their donors for carrying this burden for communities that desperately need your support.
#HurricaneBeryl made history as the largest hurricane to hit the Atlantic Ocean this early in the hurricane season. Violent winds struck the Windward Islands, causing what news outlets are calling “Armageddon-like” devastation across the #Caribbean. Earlier this week, Beryl made landfall in #Texas, causing extensive damage and leaving over 2.7 million customers without power. Mercy Chefs has deployed to Carriacou, #Grenada, and #Houston, TX, to bring hand-crafted, chef-prepared meals to hurricane victims who are starting to rebuild their lives. As Hurricane Helene barrels toward the Florida Panhandle, the American Red Cross is working closely with partners and officials across Florida and Georgia to finalize response plans and urges everyone to make their storm preparations now. The Red Cross is rapidly mobilizing some 275 trained disaster workers, truckloads of supplies and dozens of shelters to help people in Florida and Georgia in the face of Helene. Red Crossers are preparing dozens of evacuation shelters along the Florida Panhandle. More shelter teams are on stand-by in case they are needed. In addition to trailers of disaster supplies pre-positioned earlier this year, the Red Cross is preparing some 30,000 snacks and 15,000 ready-to-eat meals, as well as emergency response vehicles. Right now, communities are preparing for potentially life-threatening impacts. The Red Cross urgently needs the support of the public to plan for and respond to disasters. You can help by making a financial donation or an appointment to give blood or platelets by visiting redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

#Carriacou in the Caribbean was flattened by Hurricane Beryl on Monday. Most of the houses are plywood and tin. They've been blown apart. There are c.15,000 people on Carriacou and the other small islands around there. They have no water, shelter or food. The sea surface temperature is c.2oC over normal; Beryl is the earliest hurricane in recent records. There are two excellent videos by Jonathan Petramala here: https://lnkd.in/e89eu9Zx https://lnkd.in/eH6qmTgW If you want to support there are dozens of GoFundMe campaigns - I've found this one by Island Windjammers (who ship cargo around the Windward Islands under sail) where they are offering to use the funds to buy supplies which they will then ship for free - credit to Island Windjammers, Inc. https://lnkd.in/eYgukNsB #hurricaneberyl #support #rebuild #caribbean #extremeweather #climate #climatechange #hurricane #charity

As we prepare for the potential impact of Hurricane Helene on the Florida Panhandle, it's crucial to prioritize safety and preparedness. The blog post my colleague, Cari (Logan) Cullen, and I wrote for #NationalPreparednessMonth is particularly relevant. Please stay informed and follow guidance from local authorities. Our thoughts are with Florida and all potentially affected areas. For those looking to assist in the recovery efforts for post-Hurricane Helene, consider contributing to the CDP Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund. Your support makes a difference in aiding those affected by disasters. #CDP4Recovery #Funds4Disaster #DisasterPreparedness #DisasterRecovery Link to support: https://lnkd.in/gAQ_3AbU Link for more information: https://lnkd.in/gdJ-Zazt
