Founded in 2022 by Sanket Shrikant and Pravesh Amin, the company caters single-serve treats like gulab jamun and shahi tukda to QSRs, hotels, and caterers. The #startup operates with a daily production capacity of 750 kilos and blast freezing capability of up to 60 tonnes per month and are frozen to sub-zero temperatures to prevent spoilage and transported to clients at -18 degrees Celsius. They used good ingredients, and this helped them keep a strong position in the market. Even though Kurkure had a little bit of a hard time in selling as much for a short while, it got better. Kingdom's Foodtech sector continues to deliver value! Jahez International Company, a #Foodtech leader in #SaudiArabia, announced its results recently and what stood out is that its profits more than doubled to almost $33m in 2023. To put this in context: 1) Delivery Hero, Hungerstation's and Talabat's parent company, has started generating positive EBITDA but still has negative net profits 2) Zomato, India's food-tech leader, has generated positive net profits for the first time 3-quarters ago and will have negative net profits for the full calendar year in 2023 3) DoorDash, one of the largest food-tech players out of USA, is still not generating profits I think you get the picture - it is difficult to actually make actual net profits in the food delivery segment. However, Saudi is on the few markets that has demonstrated that it can be done, at scale and consistently. What are the drivers of profit for Jahez? 1) Consumer need: Saudi consumers love ordering food. The market is already SAR 16bn and we expect it to more than double by the end of this decade. 2) Profitability mindset: Saudi foodtech players such as Jahez International Company have consistently focused on profitable growth instead of growth-at-all-costs. 3) Focused growth: Food delivery is a hyperlocal business and players in Saudi have all initially focussed on their niche locations. For example, Jahez focused on central region initially where they have now emerged as the largest player. They have differentiated on other value proposition dimensions such as easy interface, being a national champion and superior customer experience to name a few. Do you agree?
