What do you call a row of zombies approaching? 🧟♀️🧟 🧟♀️🧟 🧟♀️🧟   𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱-𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲..   As 7th December 2023, most remaining Zombie agreements have been terminated, this means that the minimum pay and contributions for employees covered by that agreement may now be set by:   🧟♀️ an award, or 🧟 another registered agreement that applies to the employees.   A new registered agreement needs to be negotiated and approved by the commission to take effect.   If your zombie agreement has been terminated, now is a good time to brush up on your modern awards to make sure you understand minimum entitlements that apply to your employees.   Payroll Edge are certified Australian Payroll Association trainers, and will be delivering the Understanding Modern Awards course right here in Perth and in person on:   🧟♀️🧟 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 Can’t wait until August? Guess i’ll do it Processing California Payroll: Start by creating Standard Operational Practice (SOP) 1. Review the PTO Policy: - Ensure understanding of the company's Paid Time Off (PTO) policy. - Verify PTO accrual rates and usage rules. - Cross-check PTO balances for accuracy before payroll processing. 2. Review Communication from the EDD: - Check for any updates or notifications from the California Employment Development Department (EDD). - Implement any changes or requirements as directed by the EDD. - Keep records of all communications for compliance purposes. Why? In California, payroll reporting involves several agencies to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. The primary agencies include: 1. California Employment Development Department (EDD): - Handles state unemployment insurance (UI), disability insurance (DI), employment training tax (ETT), and state income tax withholding (SIT). - Employers must file reports such as the Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages (DE 9) and the Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages (Continuation) (DE 9C). 3. Internal Revenue Service (IRS): - Handles federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare taxes. - Employers must file forms such as the Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return (Form 941) and the Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return (Form 940). 4. California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR): - Ensures compliance with wage and hour laws, including minimum wage, overtime, and workplace safety regulations. - Employers may need to report on specific labor conditions and compliance with state labor laws. 5. Social Security Administration (SSA: - Employers must report employee earnings and withholdings for Social Security and Medicare taxes. - Form W-2 must be filed annually to report wages and tax withholdings. 3. Collaborate with HR on I-9 Audits: - Discuss with HR to understand the frequency and timing of I-9 audits. - Ensure all employees have completed I-9 forms on file. - Review any recent audit findings and address any issues. 4. Understand the Payroll Frequency: - Determine the frequency of payroll runs. 5. Learn the Payroll Process: - Get familiar with the payroll software and tools used for processing. - Understand the steps involved from data entry to final payroll submission. 6. Develop Validation Points: - Create checkpoints at various stages of the payroll process to ensure accuracy. - Implement a system for verifying employee data, hours worked, and deductions. - Perform regular audits of payroll records to detect and correct errors. 7. Documentation and Continuous Improvement: - Document each step of the payroll process for clarity and consistency. - Regularly review and update the SOP to reflect any changes in regulations or company policies. - Seek feedback from HR and other stakeholders to improve the process.
