Kion North America, a lift truck manufacturer, has agreed to produce and assemble the FoxBot autonomous trailer loader/unloader (ATL) by Fox Robotics at their facility in Summerville, South Carolina. This partnership aims to address Fox Robotics' significant demand and enhance their supply chain capabilities, as stated by Marin Tchakarov, CEO and President of Fox Robotics. While the financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, this collaboration follows recent news of Walmart deploying 19 of Fox's autonomous forklifts across several distribution centers and acquiring a stake in Fox Robotics. Fox Robotics, based in Austin, Texas, markets the FoxBot as the first electric, stand-up autonomous forklift of its kind, designed specifically for warehouse loading dock operations. Since launching in 2019, FoxBot ATLs have handled nearly 3 million pallet pulls. Jonathan Dawley of Kion North America highlighted the strategic importance of this technology in revolutionizing logistics and transportation, particularly in automating trailer loading and unloading processes. After many months of Walmart testing these autonomous dock trucks, it would be interesting to find out what the actual unloading rates are for these self-driving lift trucks, and if the dock design or area has changed or increased to accommodate your typical high volume grocery house. #supplychainconsultants

I remember when Walmart's autonomous floor-cleaning machines captured the attention of our industry. It's applying the same thinking now with autonomous forklift trucks...and putting money behind it. The Efficiency Imperative was one of the five trends for 2024 we called out at IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) at the start of the year, with technology expected to play a bigger role in driving operational efficiencies and reducing costs. Building on a 16-month proof of concept, Walmart, in partnership with Fox Robotics will deploy 19 autonomous forklifts across four of its high-tech distribution centres. Using AI-powered machine vision and dynamic planning, the forklifts unload pallets from the trucks that arrive at the DC, moving them into the automated storage and retrieval system. Walmart sees huge potential with this technology, investing growth capital for a minority stake in Fox Robotics. Is this another case of Walmart leading industry thinking and creating more competitive advantage?
