Whenever I’m down in the dumps about companies wrecking the planet, I think about Ray Anderson for a bit of hope. Here’s his story ⬇ 🔸 Ray Anderson founded Interface in 1973, and grew it into one of the world’s largest carpet manufacturers. 🔸 When he was in his 60s, he had awakening after reading Paul Hawken's book. He realized just how much harm was being done to our planet in the way we manufacture products. And Interface was part of that. 🔸 At the time, Interface was extracting 1.2 billion pounds of materials a year to make new carpets, most of it being oil & gas to make plastic fibers. Those carpets would go to offices, and after a decade, end up in a landfill. 🔸 So, Ray set himself a goal: to bring the production process into a closed loop - meaning no new materials to make new carpets. 🔸 That meant changing everything. They changed their factories and machines to make new products from recycled, recuperated carpets. They set up a leasing system, so old carpets would go back to Interface, instead of ending up in a landfill. They went from linear production, to entirely circular. 🔸 Ray Anderson died a few years back, but Interface is now operating on 99% renewable energy, and sees less than 8% of old carpets going to waste or landfill. Goals definitely accomplished ✅ Whether you're a founder like Ray, or an employee in a huge company, transforming your workplace from the inside can have a huge impact on the environment. Try organizing a test screening of The Week if you want to learn how! If you have any other examples of workplaces completely turning things around for the climate - can you share them with me? #circulareconomy #sustainability #hr #esg #climate #manufacturing #textiles #interface #csr #drawdown #Atlanta #Georgia #plastics

Two years after their first invisibility shield, UK-based Invisibility Shield Co. launched a 2.0 version of their product, now made of recycled and recyclable materials. The first shield was an affordable shield, using a precision lens array to direct much of the light reflected from the subject away from the observer, sending it sideways across the face of the shield to the left and right. From the observer’s perspective, this background light is ‘smeared’ horizontally across the front face of the shield, over the area where the subject would ordinarily be seen. The second generation has been improved in various areas. Read more at https://lnkd.in/euq8Ffuz #materialinspiration #invisibilityshield #invisibilityshieldco #materialdistrict #invisibility
