Life Update : I'm ending my 25 years corporate career on Dec 31st, 2023 & moving back to India. I would be starting my own wealth-managment company . Reasons : Got bored and tired of monotonous work , endless flights/dragged- meetings and selling age-old products (lack of cutting edge technology). In simple words, in last few years, have been doing something that can be done by everyone else i.e. no special efforts or brains required. Wanted to do something more wholesome ,which is intellectually stimulating & where one can make money as a byproduct. Apart from that I was seeking freedom like every other human-being - free to work on whatever I want, whenever I want and with whomsoever I want. And that too before it is too late in life ! This seems more important to me at this stage of life as compared to having a dream run in career and handsome finacial-rewards if I remain in the job. Had a plan to leave bit earlier but then a promotion came along in March - thought that things might change , but many-a-times things change but they don't change in reality. Will like to thank as well as convey my best wishes to the management of the 3 organisations where I worked during my corporate stint - Sumitomo Chemicals , Sinochem, Monsanto India (now Bayer). Also thankful to guidance from few great mentors (Ernest Louis, Raj Ambekar ,Om Manchanda, Zia Hajeebhoy, Jagresh Rana , Gyanendra Shukla, Dhiraj Pant Rohit Berry) that shaped my career as well as thinking process. Life would have been very different if I had not met these great people. Also thankful to so many great colleagues as well as friends who helped/guided me along the corporate -journey. Future : I started my work-life from stock -market in mid-90s ( burnt my hands as I was not prepared) and going back to same but with lot of preparedness over last last few years. Indian-economy happens to be one of the brightly shining stars among few other coutries in 21st century and it is roaring to go. Plan to contribute to its future in my own limited capability.

I met someone interesting last year. He has made hobbies out of my oblique interests: he hikes and orienteers, and spams the family group chats with new routes, and "oh, look, I found a new stream down South Mountain." He not only sets up his bookshelf for virtual meetings, but prioritizes that knowledge, so that a sheet of dust may never settle on his growth. He returned to the napkin on long walks, longer meditation retreats––experiencing more solitude, more noise, and more life in one year than I did in thirty. I found myself this year. There were blank spaces in my calendar, something foreign to me, and I was tasked to fill my time with plans of my choosing. It was unusual and boring, and new habits needed moulding. My second son was on his way to college, and I considered all the forks in the road that brought me here. In the India of my youth, students didn't take gap years. You simultaneously studied for school and tried to crack a very difficult standardized examination. You did not write a personal statement; you prayed for admission based on a handful of scores. Then you graduated and worked till you could relocate to a bigger city, while trying to find the means to provide your family––the one you started when you were very very young––stability, as tradition dictates. I took my gap year finally, with a satisfactory grade at parenting, amidst big pressures: a confluence of paradigm shifts in industry and paradigm shifts in my personal development. Free of old expectations, I questioned what my pulse truly beats for. What excites me most has always been answering tomorrow's questions; what that means in our current moment is being at the crease of novel technologies. It brings me great joy to join hands with Balkrishan "BK" Kalra and Piyush Mehta in ushering in a new era for Genpact. In one of our OB classes, we were asked to write our obituaries - how we wanted others to think and talk about us once we were dead! A few bright classmates spoke about leaving behind a legacy, reaching great heights in their careers, becoming a CHRO or a CEO, and changing the world. As I listened to these answers, a friend leaned in and cheekily whispered, "They talk about leaving a legacy that people will remember. Can they even name the first 10 Prime Ministers of our country?" Pardon my lack of general knowledge; I could barely list 5 or 6 myself, but this remark made me wonder - if I cannot even remember the leaders of my country, who would care about me becoming anything? Growing up in the competitive environment of India, I have come across countless individuals whose intelligence and accomplishments have often left me in awe, but so have their moral bankruptcy and spinelessness! I am no saint, but the most fulfilling relationships and work experiences I have had are with those who navigated their moral compass with integrity and compassion, irrespective of their intelligence. These relationships may be few and far between, but those are the ones that I remember and cherish. Those are the ones that have shaped me, guided me, and will continue to do so. "I don't aspire to become a CHRO or a CEO, nor do I think I have what it takes. But if there is probably anything I would want to be remembered for (by a handful of people), it is my character - authentic, vulnerable, welcoming, and humorous!" - I penned down my obituary. There's a lot of debate and discussion surrounding; Narayana Murthy's statement about a 70-hour workweek. But, is all this debate really necessary? From my pov: I don't think so, and here's why. Wait before criticizing me; Please read the whole post. Narayana Murthy sir didn't make it mandatory at Infosys, Nor did he suggest that every company should enforce it compulsorily. His exact words were; my request is our youngsters must say: ↳ This is my country, ↳ I want to work 70 hours a week. It was a request, not a mandate. He shared his pov on the need for hard work to compete globally, & I believe he's right. Achieving extraordinary things demands extraordinary efforts, which, Indirectly, often translates to working harder & smarter. Ultimately, the choice of how much one works lies with the individual. It's, → Their life, → Their goals, & → Their aspirations. Before passing judgment on Mr. Murthy, let's remember, His substantial contributions & the caliber of person he is, Rather than scrutinizing his statement. There's no animosity towards those who may not align with his viewpoint. It's a harsh truth that exceptional achievements; Often demand exceptional commitment. Because, if success was easily attainable through regular efforts, Everyone would have achieved greatness. But that's not the reality. Icons like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Ratan Tata, & of course, Narayana Murthy, attained their pinnacle through a blend of relentless hard work & shrewd strategy, often involving extensive hours in their respective fields. So, the hours you invest are your own. Because it's; ↳ Your life, ↳ Your journey. In the end, it's not about the hours you put in, But the heart you invest. Looking back in 2020, when I see how an intent to serve the community, especially young people, by creating helpful resources to help them in their career planning through Gyaannirudra has grown over these four years, it fills me with joy and happiness to witness this growth. Although it has not been a smooth journey over these four years, There were, are, and even will be several challenges while going through this journey. But, as it is said, "As long as there are challenges, there is life." And then, when you start something on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, it will grow, irrespective of how rough or smooth the path is. I am extremely grateful to all those who have supported me throughout these years of building a platform, creating resources, and providing opportunities to everyone to help them shine through their careers. And I even feel privileged when I see how our small-2 efforts at Gyaannirudra are bringing smiles to faces and adding meaning to the lives of thousands of young minds. Why was it painful to leave the TATA Group? Being a part of one of the companies of the prestigious Tata Group, I was certainly doing great. However, there was one problem. I felt that the growth of the organization did not satisfy my aspirations. I always wanted more; I was convinced that there was a possibility of doing more. So, I took, what I believe was, one of the toughest decisions in my life: leaving the TATA Group.   I had by that time, worked for and left multiple companies. But leaving TATAs was different.  I was proud of working for TATA Group. The opportunity that I had in hand was that of the India CEO at Gallup. I was faced with one of the second biggest dilemmas in my career. (The biggest was setting up WE-Matter vs. taking up another job). I wanted to be a CEO at 40. On the one hand, this opportunity helped me achieve my career goal. On the other hand, the deep desire to work with TATA Group surpassed all the excitement I had to join Gallup. I was left wondering about some of my friends working in the army, serving the nation in Kargil.   How is working for the army and TATA similar? The Purpose of the army, to serve and protect Mother India, made working for the army pious, so selfless, and pure. Those who are from the army pour their heart and soul into protecting their country, their beloved motherland, so much so that it overshadows the struggles of low compensation, risking their lives, and staying away from their families for a long time. In their heart lies the pride of serving the country till the very end.   I think what makes the TATA Group unique is the connection with the Purpose of the group. The group’s Purpose is to serve so society and do good for the country. The Purpose was instilled in every person who worked there. Although Gallup offered me a compensation that was 2.5 times that of my compensation at Tata Group, it was the strong connection that I had developed with the Group made it tough for me to leave. A strong sense of Purpose is the biggest tool for enhancing performance and reducing attrition. Although I ended up leaving the company because of my career aspirations and compensation requirements, I still take pride in having worked for TATA.   It is the sense of Purpose that compensates for the compensation, job roles and hierarchy. It always makes one feel as if one was leaving an integral part of one’s identity when one leaves such a company.   Hence, I decided to give utmost importance to PURPOSE in the W.E.-Matter model.
