⚡How do governance contexts shape the scaling strategies of energy communities? ⚡ In the final paper of my #PhD published in the flagship journal of the Earth System Governance Project, Loïc Cobut, Dave Huitema, Mendel Giezen, Amandine Orsini and me compare three cases and their governance contexts to better understand what strategies energy communities follow in their scaling journeys. By examining Courant d’Air in Belgium, Coopérnico in Portugal and Energiecoöperatie Zuiderlicht in The Netherlands, we find that: 🤔 Energy market liberalisation has brought efficiencies to transitions but leaves a democratic deficit in energy governance. This opens the space for energy communities to challenge existing practices, engage with local stakeholders and engage with incumbents. 🔆 Multiple types of actor networks are at the disposal of energy communities. These include internally built ones, networks that engage local actors (such as SMEs or municipalities) and (supra)national networks that allow for interest representation and knowledge transfer. 🌐 These networks are necessary for growing individual communities, replicating their practices and ultimately contributing to broader institutional change. 📶 Regulators and public authorities have a stronger role to play in levelling the playing field and supporting citizen-led action for energy communities to scale. This is especially true if goals of engaging citizens in energy democracy are to be met with renewable energy targets. Datacentres are the "Canary In The Coalmine" in Ireland and FDI; if you cannot provide a clear and trustworthy plan without constant flip-flopping on the policy, you create Stagnation = Uncertainty = projects go someplace else for ICT-related services, Chip manufacture, pharmaceuticals and many other of the FDI industries which have dragged Ireland up from mainly exporting Live Cattle and People in the 1970's. We are sleepwalking into a situation where we have become a backwater for innovation after working so hard these past 50 years to shift our economy from depending on the export of Live Cows 🙏 Let's work together and find the solutions to decarbonise our electrical grid whilst maintaining the economic and job dividends of ICT, Pharma, & Chip manufacture 🤞 My interview with Joe Lynam Newstalk on Thursday covers more on this complacency and entitlement at https://lnkd.in/dSD7MKny https://lnkd.in/ebpwvevE IDA Ireland Maurice Mortell (he/him) Séamus Dunne Peter Lantry Joe Lynam Simon Harris David McAuley Howard Pheby Colm Fagan Tommy Fitzpatrick Jinél Fourie Emma Fryer Séamus Dunne Gary Watson
