Ever feel stuck in your career? Here’s how to start a personal development plan: Self-Assessment: Identify your strengths and areas for improvement. Take some time to reflect on your skills, achievements, and where you need to grow. Set Goals: Be specific. Where do you want to be in 1, 5, or 10 years? Having clear, measurable goals gives you a target to aim for and a way to track your progress. Action Steps: Break your goals into actionable steps. What do you need to do to achieve these goals? Create a roadmap with milestones. Review Regularly: Keep track and adjust as needed. Life changes, and so do goals. Regularly review your plan to make sure you’re still on the right path. Quitting a job is okay. Moving on is okay. Struggling is okay. What is not okay is staying somewhere you're not valued and appreciated. It's important to recognize that every individual's journey and experiences are unique, and what matters most is finding a professional environment where one can thrive and feel genuinely valued. Remember, prioritizing personal growth and fulfillment is essential for long-term success.

"The fastest way to get to the moon is to strap yourself to a rocket ship" This piece of advice changed the trajectory of my career. Over the course of the last ten years I've used it as a strategy, especially when starting out in a new role. It goes like this: find the person in your organization or on your team who is making things happen and getting results. Then, do whatever you can to help them and make their professional life easier. It's not about building good faith, though that's a big bonus, or about sucking up. This strategy is about gaining exposure to how that person thinks and what they prioritize. As well as, gaining a clear understanding of what you don't know. This is invaluable.

This is a conversation with an older friend from many years ago. Friend: “I worked hard all through my career to reach the top role in my function and now I feel stuck” Me: “How is that even possible?” I asked him Friend: "I think it is a professional mid – life crisis." I didn’t understand it then but I think I understand it now to some extent. A professional mid – career soul - searching (vs. crisis) happens to many of us. For some of us, the climb to the top may be a difficult one only to find that the so called influence & prestige that comes with it may not be as gratifying as we hoped. Meaning is different from achievement. Sometimes it is because we get weary of the repetitive nature of work – let’s face it, there is a routine to most occupations. Or maybe as we grow up, we want a sense of alignment between who we are as people & what we do professionally. Whatever the reasons that trigger it; it is a reality for many - don't ignore it. It is often a sign that we are evolving. And when we feel stuck; the most important thing to do is to move forward. This may mean re-evaluating where we are going; a personal re-brand; taking some risks & experiencing some vulnerability. I really enjoyed this HBR article by Rebecca Knight on questions we can ask ourselves at the mid-point of our career. There might be an unlock in one of the answers!
