The UK's Royal Marine modernisation plan has made notable progress in the first year of a decade-long initiative, particularly in developing a sophisticated communications network, as shared by Lt. Col. Will Jerrold at last month’s Future Soldier Technology conference in London. The transformation intends to enhance strategic capabilities, including the introduction of new equipment and the development of uncrewed systems, positioning the Royal Marines for advanced distributed operations and global crisis response. https://bit.ly/3JbR8U8 #RoyalMarines #MilitaryModernization #FutureSoldier #DefenceInnovation #GlobalSecurity #UncrewedSystems #StrategicCapabilities

🔍 Summary for LinkedIn post: Adm. Daryl Caudle, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, emphasizes the importance of the Arctic region and increased naval presence in countering Russia and China's territorial claims. The Arctic holds significant natural resources and is becoming increasingly militarized. Adm. Caudle highlights the need for infrastructure development, such as ports and airfields, to support naval operations and enhance deterrence. He also emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and training exercises to build interoperability. The U.S. Navy must invest in ships capable of operating in challenging Arctic conditions. #ArcticSecurity #NavalPresence #InfrastructureDevelopment #InternationalCollaboration #ArcticResources #MilitaryDeterrence

👨🏼💻 The US Military utilized the “VUCA” acronym to handle the new and uncertain environment that was about to ensue in the following years. VUCA stands for the following: V – Volatile (unpredictable potentially for the worse) U – Uncertain (not to be relied upon) C – Complex (multiple connected parts) A – Ambiguous (open to multiple interpretations) What makes the acronym VUCA so critical Is that it pertains to the possibility of multiple environmental changes occurring at the same time or at least in sequential.

I’ve developed and will be teaching the Intelligence Support to Littoral Operations Course to MCISRE Marines on the West Coast in March. Glad to discuss other deliveries and interest. OUTCOME: To train intelligence Marines to meet the demands of the future operating environment characterized by complex terrain, technology proliferation, information warfare, and the need to shield and exploit signatures, in an increasingly non-permissive maritime domain. Intelligence Marines will be able to operate within or provide support to littoral and maritime operations within the entire information environment to all components of the Marine Air-Ground Task force (MAGTF). SCOPE: This course will ensure Intelligence Marines understand the Future Operating Environment characterized by contested environments, increasing proliferation of Anti-Access Area Denial systems (A2AD) and increasing great power competition. Specific focus on Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO), Littoral Operations in a Contested Environment (LOCE), and Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO) will be incorporated in order to ensure the reduction of uncertainty when planning and conducting these operations. Upon completion Marines will be able to plan, gather, consolidate, analyze, produce, and share information in support of the warfighting functions and all elements of the MAGTF.

New review: Duncan Redford on David Kenyon's _Arctic Convoys: Bletchley Park and the War for the Seas_. London: Yale University Press, 2023. https://lnkd.in/e-4NsScU "_Arctic Convoys: Bletchley Park and the War for the Seas_ by David Kenyon is an excellent and long overdue book. It explores the role of signals intelligence at the operational and tactical levels on the Arctic Convoys of the Second World War and is firmly based on the rigorous analysis of primary sources, some of which have not been exploited. As Kenyon rightly points out, the general view of the Arctic Convoys was determined by the popular understanding of the Convoy PQ-17 catastrophe. In 1942, Convoy PQ-17, the first significant joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command, was ordered to scatter, resulting in the sinking of 24 out of the 35 Russia-bound merchant ships by German submarine and air attack. This book is therefore a useful corrective to the notion that the Arctic Convoys were only defined by PQ-17, and, more importantly, explores what was known, assumed, and feared at the time—not just for PQ-17 but for the other convoys as well...."
