Longer consults for endometriosis sufferers on the way A $49 million funding boost will see two new MBS items added in July next year for specialist gynaecological appointments. "On Friday, the Federal Government announced a $49.1 million plan to introduce two new Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items enabling extended consultation times. The changes will be rolled out on 1 July next year and will also cover conditions such as chronic pelvic pain and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is expected the boost will fund 430,000 more services to help women to receive consultations of 45 minutes or longer. Specifically, the Medicare changes will subsidise $168.60 for a minimum of 45 minutes during a longer initial gynaecologist consultation, compared to the standard rate of $95.60." https://lnkd.in/e4yzebp4

Reading this article on IUD insertion pain really hits home on an important issue: the customer experience in healthcare is absolutely critical. When we talk about any service, but especially something as personal as reproductive health, we need to think about the experience from the patient's perspective—how they feel, how they are heard, and whether they trust their provider. In this case, the pain from IUD insertion isn't just a physical issue; it's about women feeling dismissed or overlooked. When providers minimize pain or rush through procedures, it erodes trust and can turn what should be a collaborative doctor-patient relationship into a source of anxiety. And let's not forget, research into women’s health continues to be shockingly underfunded. How can we adequately address women's healthcare needs when we're not investing in understanding their experiences fully? We have to do better in healthcare by prioritizing the customer (or patient) experience, and that starts by truly listening, respecting pain, and providing more comprehensive research into women's health. #WomensHealth #HealthcareInnovation #CustomerExperience #PatientCare #ReproductiveHealth https://lnkd.in/gVRgUTRq

"Women with endometriosis who have endured years of excruciating pain are being “fobbed off” by doctors and told their symptoms are “all in their head”, leading them to give up seeking NHS treatment, new research has found." Unfortunately, this is not a UK phenomenon but rather a worldwide issue women have been facing for decades. Facing a similar block at all stages of their experience with endometriosis from diagnosis to treatment. It is not a secret women have been treated as hysterical throughout history when they sought medical help and in 2024 this still continues in one form or another. And for endometriosis patients or those still seeking a diagnosis, it is extremely hard to live with a very physical condition affecting multiple organs and systems and having nowhere to turn to. We will repeat this until it becomes a reality - women deserve better. Thanks to the increasing level of awareness of endometriosis both across the general and medical community, we are hopeful that endometriosis research and management will keep going forward and upward. Endometriosis is not really bad period pain. It is a condition that causes chronic pain and infertility. There is no cure. The current Medicare system pays a very low rebate for gynaecological care, leaving women with short consults that barely scratch the surface of their issues, or huge out of pocket expenses. In rural or regional areas, it’s nearly impossible to get help. On average, it takes 7 years to get a diagnosis on Endometriosis. Please sign the petition demanding Medicare cover longer consultations in line with what is paid to other specialists including gastroenterologists, cardiologists and neurologists allowing gynaecologists to offer better care, and attract more specialists to work in the field, lifting the standard of care nationwide. https://chng.it/TgKdTThyY8 #iwd2024 #InspireInclusion
