A recent article from Cell & Gene provides a comprehensive comparison of the FDA and EMA's approaches to integrating AI/ML in drug development and manufacturing. Both the #FDA and #EMA have recognized the potential of AI/ML in revolutionizing drug development. The FDA's approach, as of May 2023, has been to release discussion papers that highlight concerns related to the incorporation of AI/ML in drug development. Chief among these concerns are the transparency, accountability, and governance of AI/ML systems. The FDA emphasizes the importance of tracking and recording key decisions, especially given the proprietary nature of many AI/ML models. On the other hand, the EMA advocates for a risk-based approach that prioritizes patient safety and the reliability of development data. Their reflection paper categorizes the risk of AI application in drug development stages and recommends transparent AI models, cautious handling of issues like overfitting, and appropriate performance assessment metrics. In summary, while both regulatory bodies aim to strike a balance between innovation and patient safety, their nuanced approaches highlight the importance of stakeholder input and collaboration. As AI/ML continues to reshape the pharmaceutical landscape, it's crucial for regulators, manufacturers, and researchers to work together to ensure a transparent and efficient AI ecosystem.
