🎉 Happy 4th of July! Today marks the 248th commemoration of the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Through the centuries, the US has grown from 13 colonies with about 2.5 million people to 50 states and 14 territories with a population of more than 330 million. The economy has swelled to over $27T. Advances in public health have cut the child mortality rate from over 45% to under 1%, while our citizens live over 35 years longer on average. Scientific achievements in the US have delivered everything from the light bulb, modern flight, and the internet to air conditioning, movies, and the polio vaccine. More than 2.7 million miles of power lines electrify the country across over 4 million miles of paved roads, with over 90% of households accessing broadband internet. The US has also been responsible for more than 800 human visits to space—the most of any country. While there will always be challenges to face and improvements to make, we've come a long way since the beginning. So grab a hot dog and your drink of choice—here's to the next 248 years. 🍻 U.S. manufacturing, especially, has a bright future ahead.

248 years ago yesterday, July 2, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was a bold step. As we take in the 4th of July holiday, credit 1440 for this timely reminder of some of the statistics of how far this once fledging nation has come: "Through the centuries, the US has grown from 13 colonies with about 2.5 million people to 50 states and 14 territories with a population of more than 330 million. The US has also been responsible for more than 800 human visits to space—the most of any country." Is the USA perfect? Far from it. We have, and continue to make, some downright reprehensive actions/decisions. Indeed, sometimes we slide backwards, yet, like all enterprises we must always seek, as the U.S. Constitution preamble states "to form a more perfect Union". Who is with me on this challenge?

The latest review by Tracey J. Woodruff, PhD, sheds light on the extensive health risks posed by endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) from fossil fuels. These compounds are linked to various health conditions, from hormone-sensitive tumors to immune system alterations. The $250 billion economic burden in the US due to EDCs highlights the urgency of addressing this issue. Learn more about the pervasive impact of EDCs and the evolving regulatory landscape in Europe in the full article.

A major development! The head of the US National Institutes of Health, Dr Monica Bertagnolli, stated this week that COVID can remain live and replicating in the body "months, perhaps even years" after the acute phase of the disease has passed. See interview, linked below. This may explain why so many people experience Long COVID, which she calls a "terrible affliction." Her statement follows research published earlier this month in the Lancet, showing proteins created by the virus were still present for up to 14 months in a quarter of people tested (study linked below) She cites the urgent search for new antiviral medications. She states "multiple vaccination is better than single to prevent long COVID" -- though of course it is not the only preventive measure available (eg there are masks, ventilation, air filtration etc. to reduce or prevent multiple exposures to the virus.) Long COVID is estimated to be impacting at least 65 million people globally [Davis, H.E., et al. https://lnkd.in/etG2A58U], and it deserves much more attention as a global health issue. Also this week, Germany's Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, made a major announcement he called a turning point in the Long COVID response, with Long COVID specialty centers now forming nationwide. Despite our ups and downs over the years, I'll always be very optimistic about the United States of America! Every morning, the first thing I do when I wake up is read the 1440 newsletter for a quick snapshot of important news. I pulled the excerpt below from their newsletter this morning as I thought it was especially poignant. "Congratulations, America—Tuesday marks the 248th commemoration of the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Jason Hellmann, Ph.D., in collaboration with Petra Haberzettl, Ph.D., received an Interdisciplinary Pilot Project Award from the CIEHS to investigate how air pollution might cause type 2 diabetes by interfering with the body’s ability to stop inflammation. Air #pollution exposure is associated with increased risk for developing type 2 #diabetes, a well-established risk factor for the development of #cardiovascular disease including heart attacks and #stroke. While not well understood, one possible explanation for air pollution-induced diabetes is by causing chronic #inflammation. My lab has a long-standing interest in understanding how the body turns off inflammation. In this proposal, we will therefore test if air pollution exposure in mice causes diabetes by stopping the production of natural “inflammation-off” signals and determine which cell types are more susceptible to the air pollution insult. This application will provide necessary funds to work with CIEHS supported Cores to aid in the generation of preliminary data for a larger, more comprehensive application to The National Institutes of Health. 🔗https://lnkd.in/gTPPNXwV

What do we want? A comprehensive EU-wide cardiovascular health #CVH policy response! When do we want it? Now! Why? To address inequalities in cardiovascular disease #CVD and improve the lives of EU citizens. The inequality in CVD across Europe is staggering. ❌ Women are 2x more likely to die of a heart attack compared to men ❌ Bulgarians are 70% more likely to die of CVD vs. 24% of Danes ❌ A woman in Lithuania is 13x more likely to die of a heart disease than a woman in France Do you know your country's CVD statistics? #CheckYourNumbers here: https://lnkd.in/eeK4xh7R Join us in making the EU a union of healthier hearts.
