After an incredible 24 hours at home with my three little monkeys and Johan Broek, I feel sad to leave them as I head off again… but I’m SUPER grateful for the chance to deliver another speech, driven by a purpose that goes beyond words. Stroke impacts 1 in 4 people worldwide, and as World Stroke Day approaches, I’m reminded of why this work is so vital. I feel a responsibility to raise awareness and to break the silence. Here’s what keeps me going: ✨ As a stroke survivor, I feel a responsibility to challenge the stigma surrounding life after stroke. It’s not a closed chapter! It’s an evolving story of possibility, strength and transformation. By speaking out, I aim to inspire others to embrace their own stories of resilience and possibility. 🏡 It’s my honour to show my children to see challenges not as setbacks but as opportunities—that resilience, hope, and determination can shape who they are and what they achieve, no matter the odds. 💪🏻 Most of all, I’m driven by the strength we share as survivors. Each of us has a powerful voice, and together, we’re creating a future filled with hope! Yesterday night the European Parliament published the answers to the written questions of Committees to the Commissioner-Designates.   At EACH, we welcome the inclusion of #CVD in the answers of Commissioner-Designate for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi. Today in Budapest, we formally launched our new EU policy submission on heart failure. As part of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Hungary has pledged to improve cardiovascular health and initiate the development of a European Cardiovascular Health Plan. An essential part of this plan must be to tackle heart failure in order for the EU is to achieve the United Nations Development Goal 3.4: to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030. To secure sufficient prioritisation of heart failure, a policy submission outlining the importance of making the condition a core component of a European Cardiovascular Health Plan has now been published for consideration by the Presidency. The submission – a joint initiative of the HFPN and the Hungarian Society of Cardiology’s Working Group on Heart Failure and Myocardial Diseases – has been endorsed by members of the heart failure community across Europe. With #WorldStrokeDay around the corner, we wanted to remind everyone of the symptoms of having a stroke. The most common symptoms people experience are: - sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; - sudden trouble speaking or understanding; - sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; - sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; - sudden confusion; - sudden, severe headache with no known cause. Use the FAST-test explained below to identify a suspected stroke, and help save a life!❤️ #Stroke #CVD #CVHealthForAll

🚀 Day 3 at JACARDI General Assembly: Driving Progress Today is Day 3 of the JACARDI General Assembly in Paris, where representatives from 21 countries are gathering to address the issue of #CardiovascularDiseases (#CVD) and #diabetes. 🔔 The sessions today will provide important updates from several Work Packages (WPs). Specifically, there will be discussions on the progress, tasks, milestones, deliverables, and next steps for💡WP6 (#HealthLiteracy), 🔍 WP8 (#Screening), 🛣️ WP9 (#PatientPathways), and 💼 WP11 (#LabourParticipation) to ensure that all efforts remain on track to meet the goals of this vital initiative. In addition, WP6 (Health Literacy) will host a training session on the Ophelia (Optimising Health Literacy and Access) process. Ophelia is an evidence-based participatory co-design methodology aimed at improving people’s knowledge about access to and engagement with health information and services. The session will be led by experts including WP6 Leader Richard Osborne and Melanie Hawkins who will also be available for a Q&A session to address any challenges faced by piloters. #JACARDI #JACARDIParis2024 #NCDs #EU4Health #HealthUnion

Today on #WorldFoodDay, we would like to focus on the effects of diet on #CVD risk. 🍅 The Mediterranean diet has shown to be beneficial, e.g. in the PREDIMED trial in which the incidence of major cardiovascular events was reduced by 31% compared with a control diet. 🍬 Added sugars have shown an independent association with CVD mortality. It is therefore recommended that daily intakes of free sugars is reduced to less than 10% of the total energy intake. 🧂When salt intake exceeds 5 grams per day, there is an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Guidelines even recommend a sodium intake of less than 2.3 grams per day.
