Plastics sustainability is an extremely important issue, and creating a value chain to increase its circularity is paramount. We are seeing huge investments into both chemical and mechanical capacity expansions which is fantastic, however, feedstock supply should not be taken for granted. By 2030 we are anticipating around 18 million tonnes of plastics recycling capacity in Europe alone, which begs the question, how will the additional feedstock be sourced? How do we ensure its quality? Will there be enough for everyone?   AMI’s new event looks to understand these issues better and find the opportunities that exist in the waste plastics value chain. We have an agenda packed with knowledge and insight.   If you are a mechanical or chemical recycler, an investor, working in waste management or a plastics processor or brand owner, this event is relevant to you! The fourth session of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty (INC-4) concluded late last month in Canada. This session placed special emphasis on the entire lifecycle of plastics, from production to disposal. This expanded focus suggests that future regulations might encompass not just downstream waste management but also a science-based, full lifecycle approach. The aim is to establish a circular economy model for plastics, promoting recycling, reuse, and remanufacturing systems, with the goal of reducing plastic pollution to zero by 2040.   In recent years, various countries have imposed taxes on single-use or non-recyclable plastic products. For instance, the UK has introduced a tax on plastic packaging that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. Recognizing the global demand for materials that support a circular economy, LCY has developed the Circular Polypropylene solution. This initiative is designed to meet market demands and fulfill our sustainability objectives by leveraging collaborations with brands and third-party recycling companies to create high-quality circular economy materials.   Our advanced Circular Polypropylene materials deliver consistent quality with specified physical properties and can be customized to meet specific requirements. These materials can incorporate up to 50% recycled PP, resulting in approximately 30% lower carbon emissions compared to virgin materials. Pleased to share reflection on WPC’s High-Level Roundtable on Plastic Pollution ahead of INC-3 in Nairobi The central role of the World Plastics Council is to bring together industry, governments and civil society for open and constructive discussions about the big global challenges facing the plastics system. These conversations are not always easy, and we don’t expect them to be. We may at points agree to disagree, but it’s very important that we listen to one another, that we share our experience and knowledge, and help to establish commonalities and opportunities that can help to drive discussions forward. This is why we have just hosted the World Plastics Council’s high-level gatherings in Nairobi. The latest in a series of events that looked at the challenge of plastic waste, and focused on building a common vision for what a legally binding global agreement for plastics should look like. Progress was definitely made, with a strong consensus emerging around a number of key topics, and for this I would like to thank the keynote speakers and all the participants for their invaluable contributions. The discussions identified the key elements of the agreement to end plastics leakage, including the importance of measures to enable circularity and the vital role of harmonization and best practices. There was also strong support for science-based chemical management frameworks for the usage of additives, and the need to unlock the investment and finance capacities of industry and to tackle plastic leakage throughout the lifecycle. It also explored ways in which our industry can strengthen its credibility as a partner at the negotiations. These included the need to deliver on announcements and statements made, for more visible investment commitments from business, and to strike a better balance between educating and listening to our partners. However, the defining red thread throughout all our exchanges came down to one essential element – trust. We all have our part to play but it will require ongoing collaboration, which like all successful partnerships hinges on building and maintaining trust. We believe that creating trust between industry, governments and civil society in a global agreement is essential for successful cooperation and implementation of policies, and ultimately the best global plastics agreement for all. The events set the right tone and focus as precursor to INC-3 and I look forward to continuing this productive dialogue over the weeks and months to come.
