In case you missed it - U of I graduate student Mallory Bermensolo shared her participation in National Science Foundation (NSF) grant funded project to address affordable housing using wood waste with KTVB News Group. Dig deeper: PrinTimber is a project and a material. Four PrinTimber teams — including researchers and students from the University of Idaho and Auburn University — are developing the science necessary to use 100% bio-based materials for the Advanced Housing Manufacturing Economy of the Future. Using minimally processed natural material waste products, the PrinTimber teams are creating manufacturing processes and turning those materials into sustainable building materials. The process sequesters carbon, uses materials local to the job site, and results in a built or printed structure with a familiar wood feel – because it is wood. The PrinTimber Lab is on the cutting edge of building with bio-based thermoset composites.

Environmental Processing Engineering as part of our course in the University of Mines and Technology-UMaT this semester, I and my team (Group1) had the opportunity to turning waste into useful product. And we finally came in conclusion of extracting fuel from waste Here’s the procedure 1. Put your gathered plastic waste into the burning can. 2. ⁠make sure all the apparatus needed for the process is sealed up. 3. ⁠place the can is the charcoal pot and submerge the other plastic containers into water to allow condensation to take place 4. ⁠let it burn for 1 hour 5. ⁠remove the can from the pot and open the submerged plastic containers 6. ⁠trace amount of the fuel will be available ( 10ml after every burn) 7. ⁠repeat the process over and over again to attain your desired level of fuel needed. The current march issue of the industry magazine Schiff&Hafen | Ship&Offshore contains an article (page 42 f.) on our Fraunhofer IFAM research projects "ROBUST" [funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Affairs and supervised by the Projektträger Jülich (PtJ)]. The "ROBUST" project aimed to develop coatings that are both mechanically robust and resistant to biofouling, addressing a critical need in offshore applications. This innovative approach enhances durability and sustainability in maritime operations. Other partners in the project were the companies Dr. Brill + Partner GmbH Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology and Momentive Performance Materials. Mehrtash Soltani, Ph.D, esteemed engineer, material science researcher and well-known and frequent contributor here on LinkedIn, has co-authored an article with his former colleagues from the ConTI Lab entitled, "Learning From Construction Accidents in Virtual Reality with an Ontology-Enabled Framework," to be published in the Automation in Construction Journal [Elsevier,] Vol. 166, October 2024. The article explores creation of a learning program aimed at maximizing safety on the construction job site through the use of technology, such as VR, to help collect, organize, enhance and present "job site accident data" in our learning and training programs. Free access to the article before August 22, 2024: https://lnkd.in/gACVkeWW Here is the Abstract: "'Learning from accidents is essential in preventing their recurrence; however, the unstructured nature of construction accident data poses a significant challenge to the retrieval of insightful information from past incidents. The absence of engaging training tools that facilitate access to such information also impedes learning. This paper aims to develop an ontology-enabled Virtual Reality (VR) framework to provide access to incident data in immersive educational settings. The framework comprises three modules: 1) Ontology module for structuring information from accidents; 2) VR module for interactive learning based on accident cases; and 3) Semantic enrichment module for embedding accident information in VR scenarios. A prototype was developed to verify the frameworks’ technical feasibility, usability, and educational potential.' User trials confirm that the solution offers a promising medium for learning from accidents. It is anticipated that the framework would enhance practices for learning from accidents and contribute to improved safety outcomes in construction." I was wondering if any meaningful comparisons could be drawn between this job site accident-avoidance learning program for workers, and machine learning programs that use Ai and deep neural loops to train bots to learn from and correct their mistakes as they work. Will the fully automated job site someday render accident-avoidance training programs obsolete? I doubt it. Unless robotic arms start holding our coffee cups for us too. But the article does address the role machine learning can play in helping create job site accident-avoidance training programs: "Studies have also considered machine learning models for predicting safety outcomes based on attributes extracted from narratives in incident report, identifying attributes with the highest impact on accident severity and predicting the consequences of accidents. However, majority of these studies focus on analyzing accidents to predict and prevent them proactively, without paying attention to the practicalities of disseminating and didactically utilizing the lessons learned from them." (Sec. 2.2.1, last [para.].)
