Pope Francis’ insightful parable about wine and grappa referenced in the book ‘Value(s)’ written by Mark Carney also speaks to the importance of all three pillars of sustainability: economy, preservation, and community; in this case the need for them to be in balance. On page three @markcarney writes about lunch at the Vatican to discuss the future of the market system.
He shares in his book:
“Pope Francis surprised us by joining the lunch and sharing a parable. He observed that:
Our meal will be accompanied by wine. Now, wine is many things. It has bouquets, colour, and richness of taste that all complement the food. It has alcohol that can enliven the mind. Wine enriches all of our senses.
At the end of our feast, we will have grappa. Grappa is one thing alcohol. Grappa in wine distilled.”
“He continued;
Humanity is many things - passionate, curious, rational, altruistic, creative, self-interested. But the market is one thing: self- interest. The market is humanity distilled.
And then he challenged us:
Your job is to turn the grappa back into wine, to turn the market back into humanity. This isn’t theology. This is reality. This is the truth.”

Witness the miraculous transformation from water to wine in the biblical story of the Miracle at Cana, performed by Jesus. See how this incredible event showcases Jesus' divine power and love for his followers.
Imagine a wedding in Cana, the air thick with laughter and celebration, but suddenly, a hush falls over the crowd. The wine has run out. Panic sets in. Now, weddings are all about joy, and running out of wine? That’s a disaster! But then, in walks Jesus. He sees the worry etched on the faces of the hosts. With a simple command, He transforms ordinary water into the finest wine. This isn’t just a party trick; it’s a powerful message. It shows us that Jesus has authority over nature, that He can take our mundane, our ordinary, and turn it into something extraordinary. Think about it—how often do we feel like we’re running on empty? Like joy is just out of reach? This miracle isn’t just about wine; it’s a reminder that God’s grace can fill our lives with abundance and joy, even in the most unexpected ways.
