"Traditional auto dealership franchises may be the most cost-effective way to sell cars after all," compared to a direct-to-consumer model, according to a new study commissioned by National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) as reported at Automotive News. Dealers are more than a retail vehicle sales business, they are our friends and family, community members, shoppers, educators, event sponsors, civil contributors, and market leaders. I am not surprised with the conclusion of the study's fiscal comparison of the 3 different models of distribution efficiency, but it only scratches the surface of the intrinsic value of our local dealerships to our community and our country in its determination the viability and value. Conclusion: "To recap, our analysis indicates that, in the US, there is only a modest per-car gross cost difference among the three channel choices modeled, and when channel-generated values are taken into account, the dealer channel pulls slightly but ahead. Given these findings and the enormous total cost that completely transforming a dealer network in pursuit of another channel would require, there is no good case for an incumbent OEM to make that change. Our analysis also revealed large variations in costs and values within channel types, implying there are larger savings to be had by optimizing one’s channel rather than by changing it. For incumbent OEMs committed to the dealership channel, and for dealers in the channel committed to their OEMs, this means collaborating more closely with each other in pursuit of such optimization, to the benefit of both."
