Today we announced DaVinci Resolve 19 public beta, a major new update which adds new AI tools, over 100 feature upgrades such as IntelliTrack AI, Ultra NR noise reduction, ColorSlice six vector grading, film look creator FX and multi source editing on the cut page. For Fusion there are new USD tools and multipoly rotoscoping tools, plus Fairlight has new Fairlight AI audio panning to video, ducker track FX and ambisonic surround sound. Blackmagic Cloud has new features that make it easy to use for large companies with multiple users collaborating on the same project at the same time. With this update, editors can work directly with transcribed audio to find speakers and edit timeline clips. Colorists can produce rich film like tones with the ColorSlice six vector palette and produce cinematic images using the new film look creator effect which emulates photometric film processes. In Fairlight, the IntelliTrack AI can be used to track motion and automatically pan audio. VFX artists in Fusion have an expanded set of USD tools plus a new multipoly rotoscoping tool which displays all of your masks in a single list. You're constantly hearing ppl saying where someone has built a tech prototype or had a flash of inspiration, but didn’t follow through to commercialization, only to watch a similar concept rake in billions years later... This often leads to feelings of frustration and regret, with the lingering question, "What if I had pursued that idea?" My perspective is a bit different however 😁 I actually take it as a compliment if my idea is realized by others down the line.. it's a testament to my creativity, isn't it? After all, transitioning a MVP or a prototype into a market-ready product is no small feat. The success of a tech product isn’t just a stroke of luck; it's built on relentless effort and persistence. As an example, in 2009, I was struck with an idea: I thought the future of filming technology wouldn't depend on green screens for post-production 3D rendering. Imagine if actors could perform in the foreground while the background was dynamically rendered in 3D based on the camera's position, direction, and zoom. Then the actor and background screen can both be captured directly by the filming camera. Even though LED technology wasn't common at that time, I was sure that screen resolutions would only get better. Charged with excitement, I set to work on a prototype. With just 50 dollars, I procured a second-hand, defective professional camera. I rigged its zoom control to a battery, and with help from a colleague who had a PhD in chemistry (he shared my passion for innovation!) we integrated an analog-to-digital converter, so we can read camera's zoom level. By affixing a chessboard pattern to the old camera, I enabled other lab cameras to track the filming lens's movements (position and orientation). It is further integrated into a 3D environment simulating the background. Finally, any alteration in the camera’s settings, including its position, orientation, and zoom, would be mirrored by corresponding changes in the 3D backdrop, all in real time. This prototype came together in just a week or two. See video demo below: https://lnkd.in/g-Tdt3yz I reached out to a few "tech investors" that time, but they did not receive my idea with much enthusiasm. Fast forward ten years, and Hollywood's "The Mandalorian" was utilizing a very similar technique, with actors performing against a backdrop of very fine-resolutioned LED screens. Witnessing this filled me with great joy actually! It affirmed my foresight that my concept was viable after all. I had no regrest actually: if I had been truly resolute, I could have taken a sabbatical in 2009 to seek out savvy investors in Silicon Valley or Shenzhen. Nonetheless, I stand by the belief that for a professor with a true innovation for technology, the opportunity to launch a venture is always present.

Conventional photography can only provide a two-dimensional image of the scene, whereas emerging imaging modalities such as light field enable the representation of higher dimensional visual information by capturing light rays from different directions. Light fields provide immersive experiences, a sense of presence in the scene, and can enhance different vision tasks. This paper aims to review deep learning-based solutions for light field imaging and to summarize the most promising frameworks. Moreover, evaluation methods and available light field datasets are highlighted.

Technology teams associated with the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) community are working on new ways to optimize the efficacy of film grain to accomplish creative objectives and overcome technical limitations in today's diverse digital video environment, according to Sean McCarthy, Ph.D., director of video strategy & standards at Dolby Laboratories and Philippe de Lagrange, senior engineer at InterDigital, Inc. in a recent interview for journalists. Dolby and InterDigital are active participants in the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), exploring ways VVC can improve the entertainment technology sector's ability to enhance and preserve artistic intent while delivering the most compelling visual experiences to broadcast and streaming audiences. "Film grain is difficult to compress using standard algorithmic methodologies," explains Lagrange. "Video compression relies on temporal and spatial consistency to predict and compress pixels. However, film grain is a random and high-entropy signal that lacks spatial and temporal consistency, making it difficult to compress." According to McCarthy, there is more to film grain than achieving excellent creative outcomes. "Film grain is used in the digital imaging world for two main reasons. Firstly, it provides a perceived sharpness to the image, enhancing the underlying visual experience," he says. This subjective sharpness cannot be measured but is beneficial for creating a more natural and less synthetic image. "Secondly, film grain can hide underlying artifacts -- such as compression or image processing flaws -- especially in low-bitrate situations. Adding film grain to the imagery can mask these artifacts and improve the overall subjective quality of the image by about 20 to 25%," says McCarthy.

The process of creating a hologram involves using a laser to split a beam of light into two parts: the object beam and the reference beam. The object beam is directed onto the object, and the light reflected from the object combines with the reference beam to form an interference pattern on a photographic plate or film. This interference pattern is then developed to create the hologram. Holograms have various applications, including security features on banknotes and identification cards, artistic displays, and holographic imaging in scientific and medical fields. They are also used in entertainment, such as holographic concerts and performances. The development of digital holography has allowed for more advanced and dynamic holographic displays, where the holographic image is generated and controlled digitally, opening up new possibilities for interactive and lifelike holographic experiences.
