Anyone who knows me knows, 𝗜 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 and the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 it brings 🎶🎼 Adolescence is a time of extraordinary possibility for young people. Yet, it’s always been heralded as a tumultuous time in an individual’s life. We just need to look at the media to see the illustrations displayed of our youth. It is, however, in large part, our narrative that impacts teens negatively. Instead of seeing them as unreasonable, misguided, and impulsive, we need to reframe their behavior as communicating to us and see them as curious and creative. We recently held a youth consultation to gain better insight into the impact YUAF has had on young people in our network. We were really pleased to hear the feedback we received. The top lines were "We have so much fun", "The opportunities are amazing" and "Networking and being in a creative community" has the biggest impact. Poll results from the consultations participants indicated a unanimous consensus (100%) among participants affirming the positive impact of engaging in YUAF programs, with most notable activities such as Industry Events, Masterclasses and YUAF Futures and Pathways being highlighted. Participants also emphasised the diverse benefits received from being involved with YUAF, including personal and professional development, increased confidence, and enhanced connections within creative communities. Insights further revealed improvements in mental wellbeing and access to opportunities facilitated by YUAF. Feedback from participants is crucial for helping us adapt and change to meet the needs of young people. We listen to what they say and work hard every day to meet their demands. I know I'm biased as a Board member of NCS - National Citizen Service Trust, but it really is vital that we have cross-party consensus on the importance of investment in young people which will support so many vital policy changes essential for a thriving economy and society.

As the number of NEETS grows, there is an immediate need to provide the skills and confidence to those who will otherwise face long-term unemployment. "For many of those without work or prospects, there has to be a very different experience from the revolving door of being offered short-term placements followed by long-term dissolution. That is why the new pilot programme, UK Year of Service, is so important. More than 80 per cent of the participants of UK Year of Service go on to full-time employment or continuing education, having gained life skills and the confidence to progress." This #SocialMobilityDay, I’ve got a Netflix recommendation for you. No — it’s not Bridgerton (sorry Polin stans). Consider spending 95 minutes with a remarkable, charismatic 11-year-old named Harry, who arrives at secondary school in Feltham, West London, unable to read or write. His dad left school illiterate. So did his grandad. Every turn in ‘H is for Harry,’ an extraordinary film by Ed Owles and Jaime Taylor, has me floored. Harry’s dad’s determination to break the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy. The tenacious creativity of Harry’s English teacher, Sophie. The facial expressions of children who have never been told before that they matter. The documentary is full of extraordinary stories, some truly uplifting. On The 93% Club’s theme of #ShareMoments, there is something about ‘H is for Harry’ that everyone can connect to their own #StateSchoolProud experiences. Parents’ Evening was WAY too real, I was right back in the chair 😅 But there is also heartbreak. What does bright, thoughtful 11-year-old Harry want to be when he turns 25 (the age of this post’s author)? A footballer? A software coder? A journalist? Not yet a teenager, Harry can already picture a future in which, aged 25, he is homeless, “trying to stay alive.” The most pernicious, enduring effect of poverty on young people is how it robs them of their confidence and the mental space to imagine that their life could be different. Since ‘H is for Harry’ was released in 2018, the number of children living in poverty has increased to 4.3 million — 30% of children in the UK (Action for Children, 2024). 30%. Just shy of 1 in 3. So, as well as #ShareMoments, I invite you to #TakeAction — carry forward the spirit of this important day. Join a social mobility organisation. Volunteer for a local reading charity. Promote outreach opportunities at your place of work. Participate in a local food redistribution network. Write to your local MP about improving youth services in your area. Connect one young person with someone who might be able to permanently change their trajectory for the better.
