Climeworks started Mammoth, the largest Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant in the world this week. Unlike conventional carbon capture which sucks carbon off the exhaust stream of a carbon intensive process such as a natural gas power plant, DAC sucks CO2 right out of air and is in theory carbon negative (removes more CO2 than the CO2 emitted in powering it). While the largest yet, Mammoth removes the equivalent of 8600 cars worth of emission (36,000 metric tons of CO2 per year), which to say the least is extremely tiny. We added 37 billion metric tons to the atmosphere in 2023! But it's a start. The technology however, has been controversial from the start. While IEA states artificial sequestration is much needed if we want to keep whatever slim chance we have to stay within 1.5 deg C. Others are not so optimistic, citing lack of conclusive efficacy data, distraction from the real goal - which is to cut emissions and large capex which will be funded from tax payer subsidies and credits. To top it all, the offsets for this project are costing a whooping $1500 per ton of CO2 removed! They are really need to be $100 or lower for companies to have serious interest. Still large DAC projects are on the horizon for the coming decade and we would know sooner or later whether this one is here to stick or yet another over zealous climate tech which couldn't keep up to it's hype. #cleantech #carboncapture #DAC

Storing liquified hydrogen below its boiling points (that’s ~20 Kelvin for the uninitiated) takes a lot of technology. Double-walled, insulated tanks are a must to limit boil-off and minimize waste. Perlite – a natural resource harvested from volcanos – has traditionally been used as insulation between tank walls. 3M™ Glass Bubbles can be an alternative solution to help our customers advance cryogenic hydrogen transport and storage.
