Freedom of expression isn’t just important — it’s essential. It’s the bedrock of a free society, and our best tool for getting closer to the truth. That’s why it’s protected by the First Amendment and defended by FIRE. #luixiaobo #freedomofexpression #firstamendment #truth #humanity

Global democracy is in decline: for the 18th consecutive year, Freedom House reports a decrease in political freedoms and civil rights in 2023. It's alarming to see the rise of 'electoral autocracies' and 'illiberal democracies', where voting is just a facade and the executive monopolizes power. It's time to defend democratic values and counter these negative trends. Together, we can make a difference for a freer and fairer world. 💪 #DemocracyInDecline #FreedomHouse #CivilRights ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale

Dictatorship, a form of governance where power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small group. It remains a concern in today's world. While some argue it provides stability and efficiency. It often suppresses freedoms, undermines democracy, and can lead to human rights violations. Understanding and addressing the impact of dictatorship on societies is crucial for promoting freedom, justice, and human dignity. #ModernWorld #Governance #HumanRights

Report: Government Tactics Targeting Activists and Journalists Introduction: Governments around the world employ various strategies to control information, manipulate public opinion, and suppress dissent. This report examines the tactics used by governments to target activists and journalists, stifling their ability to uphold democratic principles and human rights. 1. Media Blackouts: Governments often suppress coverage of protests, dissent, and controversial issues by exerting control over state-owned media outlets or press credentials. This censorship limits the dissemination of alternative viewpoints and fosters a one-sided narrative that favors those in power. 2. Online Disruption: The proliferation of social media platforms has provided governments with a new battleground for suppressing dissent. Through the use of bots, trolls, and coordinated disinformation campaigns, governments flood social media with propaganda and harassment aimed at silencing critics and shaping public opinion in their favor. 3. Legal Threats: Governments resort to issuing legal threats or lawsuits against journalists and activists to intimidate them into self-censorship. By leveraging defamation, sedition, or terrorism laws, governments create a chilling effect on freedom of expression, deterring individuals from speaking out against injustice or corruption. 4. Selective Prosecution: Selective prosecution targets specific activists or journalists for their speech or activities while turning a blind eye to similar actions by government supporters or allies. This double standard undermines the rule of law and erodes trust in the judicial system, further marginalizing dissenting voices. 5. Surveillance and Monitoring: Governments employ digital surveillance to monitor activists' and journalists' communications, meetings, and activities. This invasive monitoring not only violates individuals' privacy rights but also serves to gather intelligence and suppress dissent, instilling fear and self-censorship within civil society. 6. Psychological Warfare: Psychological tactics, such as gaslighting, are used to undermine the credibility and mental well-being of activists and journalists. By sowing doubt and confusion, governments aim to discourage further activism or reporting, perpetuating a climate of fear and self-censorship. Conclusion: The targeting and harassment of activists and journalists by governments represent a grave threat to democracy and human rights. These tactics erode freedom of expression, stifle dissent, and consolidate power in the hands of authoritarian regimes. It is imperative for civil society, international organizations, and concerned citizens to remain vigilant in defending the rights of activists and journalists and upholding democratic principles worldwide. #GovernmentTactics #Activists #Journalists #FreedomOfExpression #Democracy #HumanRights #Censorship #Surveillance #LegalThreats #PsychologicalWarfare #SelectiveProsecution Mary Lawlor

'Political sovereignty refers to a nation's authority to govern itself independently and make decisions regarding its internal and external affairs without external interference. It encompasses the exercise of political power, the rule of law, and the protection of individual rights and freedoms. While political sovereignty is a fundamental principle of statehood, it is not always synonymous with liberation or genuine self-determination. Political sovereignty can be compromised by factors such as authoritarian regimes, external influence, and internal conflicts, which undermine democratic governance and restrict citizens' rights and freedoms. True liberation requires not only political sovereignty but also social justice, economic empowerment, and respect for human rights.' #sovereignty
