Hiring for PR? Look for these 5 qualities. I evaluate these when hiring at Clarity Communication They’ve helped me onboard some of the best PR professionals. And bonus: they’re great to work with! 1. Are they optimists? In my experience, optimism goes a long way in PR (and life!). These professionals can turn anything into opportunities and bring in new ideas. Both are game-changers in PR. 2. Do they over-communicate? In PR, communication is key. And over-communication gives you clarity. You need folks who do it seamlessly. 3. Are they honest? As you know, am all about clear communication. And a big part of that is honesty. Managing expectations realistically is not just the right thing to do, but also more effective. 4. Are they eager? Having a strong drive is a must. Without passion for PR, they’ll soon fizzle out. The field is such. 5. Are they change-ready? I have been handling projects for years and one thing that doesn’t change is ‘change’! Hire people who can cope with sudden changes well because PR is all about that. Being able to switch gears fast is essential. I’d love to know your experiences hiring for PR. Drop me a comment. #PR #hiring #prproffesional

What should you look for when hiring a CMO? There are a number of things, but one is more important than all the rest: Long range vision. The ability to see down the road. The other things are also important: The ability to put a plan around it, articulate it clearly, sell it internally, lead execution on it including tactical and creative, measure its effectiveness, and adapt as needed. Plus a backbone, because vision always comes with opposition…possibly even from you. All those are vital. But they all depend on the primary skill of vision. If you already have vision, you don’t need a CMO - you might need a marketing manager, marketing director, or creative director, but not a CMO. But if you don’t have vision, hire for vision. Make sure you get as much of the other stuff as well, maybe including a good throwing arm for the company softball team, but get the vision. That’s the thing worth paying CMO level salary for. Vision can be (and should be) game changing. Hire for vision. Then buckle up for the ride.

In the hustle of NYC, a quick snack run turned into a LinkedIn message that landed Alyssa Bonanno the role of fractional CMO at Ithaca Hummus. Today, she's part of a growing trend of fractional marketing execs, changing how companies tackle their marketing needs. As expectations for CMOs evolve, fractional roles offer flexibility and expertise without a long-term commitment. Fractional CMOs step in to bridge these gaps, whether due to parental leave, sick leave, or sudden departures. It's a win-win for both sides, making sure there's the right fit without the risk. Hiring a fractional CMO is a big decision for many businesses — so the question becomes, when is the right time to consider the hire? What scenarios need to exist? ➝ Starting Out: Need strategic guidance from the start? A CMO leads critical steps in user acquisition and growth. ➝ Stagnant Growth: A marketing leader refreshes your approach for better results. ➝ Communication Challenges: Need a narrative refresh or improved media outreach? A CMO enhances your story and visibility. ➝ Retention and Engagement Focus: A CMO brings fresh strategies to keep customers engaged while fostering better team collaboration, even part-time. Have you considered hiring fractional? What questions would you need answered before taking that step?

Career in PR, not sure? Back in 2008 when I started my journey in PR, even I was not sure. Many people who didn’t understand the industry would ask me what do you do, what’s your work profile, who’s your customer etc? And it was so difficult to explain and make people understand the role. I remember when I joined my first PR company, we used to manage a handful of clients with a very small team. Fast forward in 2024, today PR is the game changer. Every company small, big, MNCs, startups and even individuals like celebrities are hiring PR professionals. People are ready to spend huge money in promoting their brand. Though companies have cut down on hiring PR agencies, they are gradually shifting towards hiring PR professionals. For them, hiring PR professional helps in promoting their brand, managing events, socials and other communication channels. I am so glad that I chose this profession at a time when it was in a very nascent stage. Today, people are looking for experienced professionals. So if you’re not sure of your career in PR, then be sure that’s it’s a thriving career option that’s going to boom in the coming years. While the opportunities in #marketing or content might shrink with new platforms and technologies taking over, the role of #PR professionals will always be in high demand.
