149. The Sacred and Profane Project—Meet the Places and Spaces Where I Was Raised: Part One—"Convergence Theory" "The Q & A Series” has no askers? Fine! So don't answer me! Next! The next posts will address aspersions, assertions, discrepancies, gossip, inferences, intimations, innuendos, rumors, suggestions, speculations, zingers about where I was born and raised. What this gossip brings to mind is Convergence Theory, which I learned about in graduate school in relationship to architectural design practices reflecting structural programming. Convergence Theory is used in other fields of study and methods of inquiry to further explore and explain intersections, nexuses, vertices of converging information and phenomenon, now referred to as intersectionality. In relationship to the places where I was born and raised, the convergence is about the intersectionality of demographics, institutions, organizations, socio-economics, and systems: family and home, church and school, neighborhood and community, town and region, private and public, sacred and profane. I have created work and written on this before. Yes, I know, people think there is evidence that I was born elsewhere (in an ark?), but I don’t know as that tale has not been told (nor proof proffered). I am not trying to maintain a false narrative or mythology, this is just what I know, have been told, and documentation I have seen. As I know it, I was born in Colorado City, Mitchell County, Texas (locally called C-City). Depending upon the route taken, it is about 25 miles south of Snyder, Scurry County, Texas, which is where I was raised. Growing up, trips to Colorado City correlated to seeing the family doctor, hospital visits, and later, trips to buy alcohol (shhh, Snyder was “dry” and C-City was the closest place to purchase alcoholic beverages). Later, my dad lived there after he remarried, so I spent time there for family events, holidays, and recuperation from the scooter wreck. Colorado City, known as the “Mother City of West Texas," is named for the Colorado River, as the town was founded on its banks. For those who grew up in the region, we call the whole area in its entirety "West Texas" (which ranges from Abilene, to San Angelo, to Lubbock (more South Plains to me) and sometimes Amarillo (more Panhandle to me), to Midland/Odessa. In childhood, those in Near West Texas usually called anything past and below Midland/Odessa as Far West Texas or Big Bend. (It is important to note that this area of “West Texas” confuses people geographically and is not to be confused with the town of West, Texas in McLennan County close to Waco.) Farming and ranching, mercantilism, and the railroads initially put Colorado City and Snyder on the map, but the discovery of oil and gas solidified their place. Scurry County and surrounding fields were some of the most prolific oil and gas producing areas in the entire state, and public schools and town boosterism reflected this until the 1980s bust.
