The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. It all makes perfect sense and I generally know what I should be doing, except that sometimes it’s just so darn hard!! When OCD is coming at you full-force and you are maybe just having a tough day anyway, how do you still keep moving forward when you are pretty exhausted with everything and it’s so very hard. Thanks again for any advice. Much appreciated!! Anonymous from Montreal, Canada" A: I'm going to begin by quoting two people who, in their own way, changed the world for the better when the chips were down. Sir Winston Churchill said quite simply and adamantly, "Never give up. Never give up. Never give up." Thomas Edison said "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." Most of the people I have helped through peer support in OCD recovery tell me "I know, but it's so difficult" or "It's so hard." They say it with exasperation and a hint of defeat. I felt that way too, but I found it within myself to keep trying. How? Why? Every time I felt defeated and felt that quitting would be the easy choice, the path of least resistance, I boiled it down to a basic choice - Suffer like this in the hell pit forever or at least take the chance that it is possible to get better. One choice certainly resulted in eternal pain and the other at least gave me a possibility of freedom. I narrowed my focus to doing what must be done in the moment; not how long the process might take. Every time I wanted to quit, I thought of my family and my freedom. Trying to get better seemed noble to me, quitting was not. I kept moving forward despite the immediate pain of doing so. What started out as a faint hope of possibility gradually turned into truth. Don't worry about speed. Just keep moving forward, despite how hard it is. My favorite Churchill quote is most fitting and I don't want you ever to forget it: "If you're going through hell, keep going." Your freedom awaits. #OCD can be defeated. I'm with you. Let's go.
