It is one thing TO THINK you can do it, and it is a totally different thing TO KNOW you can do it! 💡 P R A C T I C E 🎯 An architect does true architecture only about 3% of her time. The rest is technical leading, detailed technical design, and active process leading, which all define the architect's role. The opportunities to do true architecture are rare. Maybe two to five in one's career. You need a proven track record, experience and recommendations, for someone to trust you with the architecture of a really complex and large system. So as an architect or an aspiring architect you need to PRACTICE. When the opportunity arises you need to be ready. You need to know that you can do it. You need to be confident, so you can convince others that you can lead the project to success. You cannot learn on the job. It is not enough time. You cannot try things on the job, because if they don't work you end your chances to get another opportunity. You need to apply things that you know that work. Things you've tried out before or you've seen them working in similar contexts. Practice on past projects. Just practice. Old projects are like dead bodies in doctors' practice. You know everything about the your old projects. Practice different system designs, different approaches, different methods. Design them in a another way and test if those designs hold water. It will be a valuable exercise.

My Approach to Hiring Architects: Creativity, Originality, and Commitment I believe hiring the right architects is critical to success in our field. Different roles—whether junior or senior—come with their own set of expectations, and I’ve developed a clear approach to evaluating the qualities that matter most. Junior Architects: The Power of a Well-Crafted Portfolio When it comes to junior architects, the portfolio speaks volumes. I look at how well the material is structured and presented. The flow of lines and the overall layout reflect a candidate’s ability to think creatively and communicate ideas clearly. Portfolios filled with too many rough concepts can be overwhelming. I prefer to see one strong, well-developed idea that demonstrates focus and attention to detail. Senior Architects: Experience and Stability Matter For senior positions, experience is crucial. Stability in a candidate’s career shows commitment and respect for the employer. Those who stay with a company for a few years are more likely to make a meaningful impact than those constantly moving between roles. Originality Over Imitation Architecture is about invention, not replication. I value candidates who show a clear creative process and produce unique ideas rather than those who simply recreate what’s already been done. I look for individuals with a distinct voice and perspective. Motivation and Alignment Understanding what drives an architect is vital. I always ask about their motivation, and if their vision aligns with mine, it’s a good sign we’ll work well together. That’s why I invest significant time in interviews – to ensure we’re the right fit for each other.

Architects, use your design skills to find yourself a job….. …..make a programme, draw a plan and be rigorous in your process. 👉Statergise and Research The great skill of an Architect is the ability to strategise and think about the big picture whilst understanding the detail. In terms of job hunts we need plan what sort of career path are you on, where do you want to position yourself and who are the practices that your beliefs and experiences align with. 👉Make a Programme We all understand the importance of programming in our projects but we rarely consider it in other aspects of our lives. A job search has time and process considerations that we should plan out, time to update our cv and portfolio, time to apply to our dream practices and cut-off time to think about alternatives. 👉Design a system As Architects we need a rigorous and thorough process. Designing a system that allows you to plan, record and keep updated on your searches is key. Record who you are applying to, the responses and markers to re-engage. 👉Understand the Deliverables In Architecture the majority of our outputs are drawing. In our job search project it is a CV, Portfolio and Cover Letter. We need to set up our standard documents but allow for adaption to each individual situation, consider the balance between the standard and bespoke. 👉Look to the experts In our projects we rely on the expertise of Engineers and Consultants, why should your job search project be any different. Engage with recruiters, they have the know-how, connections and impetuous to help find you a job and provide valuable advice. We have such a strong and varied skillset that can be just as applicable to the job search as a building. Here are some reasons why: 1. **Limited Learning Opportunities**: When the core architectural decisions are already made, engineers might not get a chance to learn or experiment with new technologies and frameworks. 2. **Reduced Autonomy**: Pre-designed systems often mean less control and flexibility for engineers. They are required to work within a specific set of constraints, which can feel restrictive. 3. **Less Innovation**: If engineers thrive in environments that allow innovation, a pre-set architecture might stifle creativity, as there’s little room to improve or adapt the system according to evolving best practices or the engineer’s ideas. 4. **Maintenance vs. Development**: In these jobs, the work can often shift towards maintenance rather than development of new features. This might be less appealing to engineers who want to build new systems from scratch. That said, some engineers may enjoy working within a pre-defined structure, especially if they prefer optimizing existing systems, focusing on performance improvements, or avoiding the uncertainty that comes with design decisions.
