Next Step is closing in on their goal of raising $70,000 this holiday season - only $15,000 more to go! Please consider a donation to Next Step before the end of the year. Any amount helps. If you have already given, thank you! You're helping young people, like me. https://lnkd.in/e8DJHAFr
When I was first diagnosed with my brain tumor at 21 years old, a huge challenge I faced was how to navigate the adult healthcare system. It's not as if you see one doctor and set up a treatment plan, and that's it, like they do in the pediatric healthcare system. Now, you see one specialist who says one thing and then another who says, "No, here's what you need to do," without thinking about what I need, how these decisions would affect ME.
It became clear that I wasn't part of the decision making process when it came to my own health. I began to feel lost, confused, and alone. How could I gain the respect of my doctors and become part of the conversation concerning my own care?
It can be really hard to know the right things to say and how to get what you need from the medical system and not fall through the cracks.
These were the kind of conversations you can only learn how to navigate as you go through them, or so I thought. When I attended my first Next Step Campference, I found myself in an environment of other young people, like me, who have their own experiences of navigating the adult healthcare system with a chronic illness, and have had those conversations before.
It really helps to have that reference point of seeing how other young people are dealing with similar challenges and sharing tips back and forth. The depth of wisdom and available resources at Next Step is hard to imagine. One participant may mention a treatment option that I might think, "That's definitely something I'd like to ask my doctor about" or "Oh, this is a great way to relieve some of my symptoms." These conversations really helped me to navigate and advocate for myself in the adult healthcare system.
I would have fallen through the cracks of the adult healthcare system, but because of your support of Next Step, I've become so much more equipped with skills and knowledge, and gained the confidence to talk with my doctors. I've been able to advocate for my needs and not just listen to the doctors tell me what's best for me. I am now part of the decision making process when it comes to my health.
Please consider donating to the 2023 Next Step Annual Fund so more young people living with chronic illness have a community to help them learn how to navigate their new adult healthcare system and get the best treatment they need, like you did for me.
Thank You and Happy New Year,
Naia

The HELP Appeal - County Air Ambulance Trust, renowned for its support in funding critical helipads across the UK, has recently made a significant impact in Scotland with a generous £270,000 donation. This donation facilitated the completion and operation of the Campbeltown Hospital helipad, revolutionizing emergency patient transfers in the region.
Campbeltown Hospital's helipad has facilitated over 330 landings since April 2021, expediting critical patient transfers for various treatments including emergency scans, maternity interventions, orthopedic surgeries, and respiratory specialist care.
Previously, air ambulances faced challenges landing in waterlogged fields, significantly hampering patient transfers. The helipad's presence has not only improved patient outcomes but also reduced transfer times during adverse weather conditions.
Robert Bertram, Chief Executive of the County Air Ambulance HELP Appeal, emphasized the critical role of the helipad in ensuring swift and efficient patient transfers, especially in trauma incidents or urgent medical emergencies.
The HELP Appeal continues its mission to enhance patient care by funding and upgrading helipads across major trauma centers and A&E hospitals. In Scotland alone, they have funded 15 helipads, benefiting hospitals such as Raigmore Hospital, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and University Crosshouse Hospital. Moreover, their contributions extend to remote communities on islands like Barra, Arran, and Mull, ensuring access to timely medical interventions.
With over 45 helipads funded nationwide and more projects underway, the HELP Appeal's impact on improving air ambulance services and patient outcomes is evident and commendable.

The Let's Save the Brain Foundation Inc. (LSTB) is a non-profit organization established in 2012, with a mission to ensure excellent medical care for indigent patients of the Department of Neurosciences at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH).
A significant percentage of UP-PGH patients contend with conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, meningitis, encephalitis, hydrocephalus, congenital malformations, brain tumors, and spinal cord injuries. While dedicated doctors provide their expertise free of charge, the financial burden persists for patients who require medications, devices, tests, and other essential medical resources. LSTB’s Patient Welfare Fund steps in to help these patients get the care they need.
The fund assists in covering the costs of medical necessities, including medicines, surgical devices, laboratory tests, procedures, and brain imaging studies. Contributing to the Patient Welfare Fund is a meaningful way to extend and enhance the lives of patients grappling with neurological challenges.
To contribute to LSTB’s Patient Welfare Fund, please visit https://lnkd.in/geu54XdG.
Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing neurological challenges. Thank you for being part of this compassionate initiative!

Ronald McDonald House Charities Dayton (RMHC) is under construction for its new 38,000-square-foot facility at 555 Valley St. in Dayton. The site intentionally sits near Dayton Children's Pediatrics at 1010 Valley St. With the recent growth in pediatric healthcare specialties in the Dayton region, RMHC Dayton has seen a significant increase in demand for services. According to the website, the nonprofit turned away 77% of families in 2022 (963 families) due to lack of room availability.
“Imagine having to say to a family that I’m sorry we don’t have a room available tonight, we’re unable to help you on this healthcare journey. We’re currently turning away more families than we’re serving,” said Rita Cyr, RMHC Dayton executive director.

As some of you may or may not know but a few years ago I started to support HeartGift. It has become very near and dear to my heart and a passion for me now.
October 10th is HeartGift day so today I want to get a head start in bringing awareness out not only to the community but to everybody I can reach out to with my social media platforms.
HeartGift provides life-saving heart surgeries to children around the world with congenital heart defects in the United States, Asia, Africa, and South America.
The children we serve need just one surgery but it’s not available where they live.
Dedicated pediatric hospitals, talented surgeons, and medical staff who donate their time and talents, as well as a diverse network of sponsors and volunteers, make HeartGift’s hundreds of free procedures possible.
The HeartGift journey is full of desperation, anxiety, and fear for parents who take a leap of faith to find care for their child.
This journey is also full of joy, relief, and is an answered prayer once hearts are mended. Children come to HeartGift very ill, struggling to breathe, and failing to thrive. Post-surgery, they have fully-functioning hearts and a lifetime of opportunity ahead!
Surgeries are provided around the world through:
– Partnerships with children’s hospitals in the United States, Africa, Asia, and South America
– Through medical mission trips
-The severity of the child’s illness determines where they receive care and the cost of surgery.
-The cost of each surgery ranges from $5,000-$25,000.
With each surgery, a life is saved, a heart is mended, and a child is given an opportunity to live a life without limits. Our supporters have the opportunity to be directly involved in saving a child’s life.
In order to qualify for a surgery through HeartGift, a child must:
-Be 14 years old or younger
-Not have undergone previous cardiac surgery
-Have a biventricular condition that can be repaired in one operation
-Have no chromosomal abnormalities
-Have an urgent need for surgery
-Live in a developing country without access to proper treatment
Our program model is built to accept children that do not need intensive medical follow-up after surgery. We recognize that any follow-up care may not be available nor do they have the financial resources to continue it.
So I ask of all of you, to donate. Even if it's just $5, donate. I promise you, every dollar collected, makes a difference.
For every dollar collected, my company will match $1 for $1 up to $25,000. That would be enough to provide up to 2 children with life saving surgeries and a chance to live!
PS - Make sure to click on San Antonio as the chapter of donation for us to be able to see your donation in order for us to be able to match it!!!
