A multi-institute team from Caltech, Harvard University and Fermilab have used a Covesion Ltd., 1-cm-long waveguide-coupled MgO-doped lithium niobate crystal with an 18.3 𝜇m polling period for SPDC. In the paper, published in Optica Quantum and titled: "High-rate multiplexed entanglement source based on time-bin qubits for advanced quantum networks." the research group demonstrate a 4.09-GHz repetition rate source of photon pairs entangled across early and late time bins separated by 80 ps. Simultaneous high rates and high visibilities are achieved through frequency multiplexing the SPDC output into eight time-bin entangled channel pairs. The Power of Connection: Why All-to-All Connectivity is Key in Quantum Combinatorial Optimization and Which Platform can Enable it Combinatorial problems often involve intricate relationships between variables. With full connectivity, qubits can "talk" to each other freely, enabling the exploration of these complex relationships more effectively. "In our paradigm we are allowed to interact any qubit or qudit with any other one. This means that the mapping of problem variables to the physical qubits/dits is a trivial one-to-one mapping. A single binary variable maps to a single qubit, and a single discrete variable maps to a single qudit. If we were restricted in which ones could interact and wanted to solve a problem which is not naturally compatible with those constraints, then the only way to do it is through a one-to-many mapping, where each variable is mapped to many qubits or qudit." Quantum light has been created in the same way for 60 years, but now liquid crystals offer an easier, more controllable way to produce it and hold the key to vastly improving quantum communication networks. This article goes into a lot more detail about how “the efficiency of entangled photons generation is as high as in the best nonlinear crystals, such as lithium niobate, of similar thickness.” And how, by applying an electric field of just a few volts, they were able to switch the generation of photon pairs on and off, as well as to change the polarisation properties of these pairs. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Niels Bultink, CEO and Co-Founder of Qblox, is live!   I first spoke with Niels almost two years ago and wanted to see what he and his team have been up to since then.   Qblox provides quantum control stacks that combine unequaled noise performance and low-latency arbitrary control flows and can be scaled to support hundreds of qubits. They have now delivered over 100 systems worldwide – in the US, Europe, and Asia. Recently, the company celebrated its five-year anniversary!   Topics we discussed included the 2.5 million euros in European Innovation Council transition funding that Qblox and SemiQon received in July – a clear indicator that this tech is bankable by subsidy instruments like the Council.   Niels and I also talked about the partnership with QuantrolOx announced in August. Finally someone addressing the problem. Still, as the GHZ state can be mapped to a fully connected graph state and the graph state model (MBQC) is as strong as the circuit model, might there be a way to circumvent the embedding problem (requirement of ancilla qubits) via quantum routing?
