“The loudest voices are the least informed.” Great panel on empowering the EV transition in the U.S. market. There is a lack of consumer understanding around EV’s and a need for leadship at the industry level.
Innovation, engagement, increases leadership are needed to empower the EV market in the U.S. was the topic of discussion at the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT) Global Symposium. Moderator Diana E. Paez of the William Davidson Institute led the panel discussion on what is needed to empower the EV transition. UMTRI's Dr. Jingwen Hu shares his crash safety expertise in The Conversation US regarding electric vehicles. "Thanks to their hefty battery packs positioned at the base of the car, EVs tend to carry considerably more weight and enjoy lower centers of gravity than conventional vehicles. This setup drastically reduces the likelihood of rollover accidents, which have a high rate of fatalities. Moreover, crash dynamics dictate that in a collision between two vehicles, the heavier one holds a distinct advantage because it doesn’t slow down as abruptly, a factor strongly linked to occupant injury risks." But vehicle safety is complex. While EV's are usually safer for their occupants, not everyone benefits. 👏Exciting news from the HumanShape suite! We have updated our 3D head shape model using high-resolution medical image data. CT images of a wide range of subjects have been processed and integrated into the model. The model now provides a highly detailed and accurate representation of the head shape, including realistic shapes for ears and scalp, which is capable of generating realistic 3D head shapes for a target population. Coming back from vacation there were two individuals who had to transfer from their wheelchairs into a traditional seat on our flight. Both looked uncomfortable, expressed concerns for their safety, concerns that baggage handling wouldn't take care of their chair, and had to deal with what seemed like disapproving looks of fellow passengers. Experts University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute are doing critical work that may someday enable these humans to safely travel in their chair. Proud of the work our team is doing.
Approximately 5.5 million people in the U.S. use wheelchairs, but they are not currently allowed to use them as seats on aircraft. Sponsored by @National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (@NIDILRR), UMTRI researchers are evaluating how WC19 wheelchairs perform using FAA procedures for testing aircraft seating. The UMTRI team Kathleen D. Klinich, Nichole Orton, Kyle Boyle, Tyler Vallier, Brian Eby, Gary Weissel, Miriam Manary, Jennifer Bishop released an interim report that shares preliminary results of their work.
