📊 A recent poll from the University of Michigan reveals that 1 in 4 Americans aged 50 and older are stepping up as caregivers for family members or friends. Dr. Sarah Patterson, a U-M demographer involved in the study, emphasized that caregiving responsibilities often fall disproportionately on individuals in their 50s and early 60s, especially women. In fact, 30% of Americans in this age bracket provide care for someone dealing with health challenges, while 23% of those aged 65 and older do the same. This further highlights the growth and need for senior care. Read more: https://heyor.ca/zpSTBj

The need and use of family caregivers is increasing, and in the US, the number of family caregivers increased by 9.5 million from 2015 to 2020. Family caregivers have worse health than non-caregivers and worse health overall compared to five years ago. Many times, caregiving responsibilities are presumed to be woman-led, however about 40 percent of family caregivers are men. I applaud the women who provide care to their family and close friends, but men caregivers are an overlooked subgroup of caregivers who are at risk of burden, stress, and burnout, and current supportive materials generally assume that caregivers are women. In addition, there are health disparities between racial and ethnic groups in health outcomes, level of care that caregivers provide to family members, and access to resources.

Caregiving is on the rise. It’s estimated that in 2020 there were 53 million caregivers, up from 43.5 million in 2015. Now, with 73 million people in the U.S. who will be older than 65 by 2030 comes a significantly increased demand for caregivers. That makes caregivers a consumer segment to watch, as they face unique challenges and needs that set them apart from the general population. CivicScience examined this segment of U.S. consumers, focusing in on the impact caregiving has on their lives, plus reactions to President Biden’s recent proposal to better support caregivers. According to a report published by the Population Reference Bureau earlier this year, "older Americans face a caregiving gap, especially those with lower incomes and dementia. Demand for elder care is expected to increase sharply with a rise in the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, which could more than double by 2050 to 13 million, from 6 million today." We have got to address the issues our population faces when it comes to aging and relying on long-term care. Join the conversation 💬 Like, comment, and share for #AdvocacyInAction. On #NationalCaregiverDay let’s explore solutions to better care for our caregivers. People want to age at home – yet one in five older adults today have complex care needs which make it very challenging. Plus, family and other loved ones taking care of older adults say they are burning out with 63% of caregivers saying they reached their breaking point last year but had no choice but to keep going. It will take a multi-sector approach to better support caregivers. Collectively, with leaders across the health sectors, we have identified existing solutions that can be expanded to support seniors’ care for our growing, elderly population: https://lnkd.in/g6dkMKTT
