Small towns are stereotypically known and loved for their wide-open spaces, strong sense of community, relaxed atmosphere and quiet surroundings. Although these qualities may be luring to adults residing in small towns, the offerings don’t always meet the expectations and needs of residing young people. A trip through central Queensland last week saw the Principal Commissioner, Luke Twyford, meet with many local service providers. This was an opportunity to hear the local stories of achievement and community spirit, but also of hardship and pain points between young people and families, and the systems supporting them. Adolescent mental ill health remains a problem in many small towns, and unfortunately, accessibility to timely intervention and support services is not always readily available. Compounding this is the inability to attract and keep specialist in small towns. We know from our Safe Spaces Growing Up in Queensland 2022 report that around half of young people between 8-18 years believe that there are enough safe public spaces in their community that promote social inclusion, autonomy, security, relaxation, and health and fitness. Over time, local governments and services have responded positively to calls for dedicated spaces for young people, but at a cost per entry, how accessible are these spaces for those that need it most? Feeling connected to a community is vital for young people to thrive in a community. It is inspiring to see that local entities continue to work towards positive outcomes for young people, families and communities.

The frontlines in communities have shifted dramatically in the last few years. We traditionally think of emergency services, crisis response teams and community services as the frontline for people in crisis. But, as the number of people experiencing #distress rises, people are seeking support and refuge in unexpected places.   Gym operators and public swimming pool staff are providing free or low-cost memberships to people who are #homeless, so they can at least access showers and toilets every day and have a #safeplace to hang out for a while.   Librarians are helping women experiencing #domesticviolence connect with emergency accommodation providers as they flee their abusive partners. Libraries also provide refuge for people sleeping rough and a place to access WiFi and charge their phones.   Café owners are hearing distressing accounts of #financialhardship and providing free coffee and snacks to those hardest hit.   Employees in these organisations are being exposed to #psychosocialhazards they never (or rarely) experienced 5 years ago. Librarians are trained to maintain library resources and assist customers. They are not social workers or counsellors. They have not been trained to support people in crisis. But they see someone suffering and they want to help. Unfortunately, without the right training and support, they are at risk of #vicarioustrauma and #burnout, and their #wellbeing may be adversely impacted.   Organisations are struggling to keep up with their obligations to eliminate or mitigate psycho-social hazards common to their industry, let alone these new psycho-social hazards their staff were never (or rarely) previously exposed to.   So what can employers do?   1.     Assess these new hazards and implement strategies to eliminate or mitigate risk. 2.     Develop/ update protocols and resources for engaging with people in distress. 3.     Provide training and support for existing staff, for example, supporting people in distress, dealing with vicarious trauma, debriefing and supervision. 4.     Consider environmental changes that could be made to support people in distress, for example, a quiet space to decompress, muted lighting. 5.     Determine if the staffing mix needs to change – from a more technical base to a more human base.   What is your organisation doing to address these new psycho-social hazards? What more needs to be done?

To establish a neighborhood network for safety: 1. Introduce Yourself: Get to know your neighbors and introduce yourself. Building a sense of community is crucial. 2. Create a Communication System: Set up a neighborhood communication system, such as a group chat or email list, to share information quickly. 3. Neighborhood Watch: Establish a neighborhood watch program where residents take turns monitoring activities and reporting suspicious behavior. 4. Emergency Contacts: Share emergency contacts and create a list of skills or resources neighbors can offer in times of need. 5. Safety Meetings: Organize regular safety meetings to discuss concerns, share tips, and plan for emergencies. 6. Lighting and Visibility: Ensure well-lit areas and consider neighborhood improvements for better visibility, deterring criminal activities. 7. Community Events: Host events to strengthen community bonds, making it easier for neighbors to look out for each other. 8. Emergency Plans: Develop and share emergency plans, including evacuation routes and meeting points. 9. Shared Resources: Collaborate on shared resources like first aid kits, tools, or emergency supplies. 10. Online Platforms: Utilize social media or neighborhood-specific platforms to keep everyone informed and engaged.
